Theresa Andersson

Hummingbird Go!

4/5

"Hummingbird Go!" is the new release from Theresa Andersson, who originates from Sweden but is now based in New Orleans. Whilst this singer-songwriter's music is described as 'pop with a jazz feel to it,' she is certainly not your stereotypical pop artist. This CD is very alternative in style and the way in which it was produced was certainly unconventional!

Instead of recording the album in a studio, Andersson used her kitchen and improvised by using bottles and wine glasses as instruments along with the violin and guitar; she was literally a one-woman band, with Tobias Froberg involved in the production. This fact alone makes her stand out as not only being fresh and original in her genre but the album confirms just what a multi-talented artist she is.

The CD contains twelve diverse, contemporary tracks, with catchy, mature lyrics, beautifully sung. "Na Na Na" is a great opening track that instantly draws you in. Other songs that stand out are, "Birds Fly Away", where the lyrics, use of instruments and ultimately Andersson's voice, are captivating; this was my favourite track. "Hi-Lo" is uplifting and hearfelt, a definite feelgood number. "Japanese Art" is fast in tempo with strong instrumental moments, a song that you quickly find yourself humming along to. "The Waltz" delivers the opposite, a much more smooth, blues feel to it, giving the listener a sense of the artist's New Orleans influence. "Locusts are Gossiping" is a song that enables Andersson to demonstrate just what a tremendous vocal range she possesses. Andersson herself is quoted as saying, " I stopped thinking in terms of traditional songwriting. I worked on shapes, forms and textures, scents and colours; elements which are more earthy and organic inspired me".

This album is undoubtedly an inspiration in terms of talent and originality! "Hummingbird Go!" will particularly appeal to fans of Katie Melua, Yael Naim and artists of this nature.
