Soulful singer-songwriter Nikka Costa, originating from L.A, has a career which spans many years, however she is still relatively low profile in the mainstream music business. The two albums she released before this CD were expected to catapult the artist into a huge success, but sadly this was not to be! The question is, will it be third time lucky with “Pebbles to a Pearl”? Will it bring her the recognition she deserves? In my opinion it has a great chance of doing just that, as the twelve tracks on the album do not disappoint; it is an album with great appeal, especially for fans of funk and soul. This CD showcases Costa’s talent and diversity; she really connects with the listener through her deeply powerful voice and catchy lyrics. To name but a few quality tracks, “Bullets in the Sky” is a very apt anti-war message, “Stuck to you” is full of angst, “Cry Baby” is more upbeat and fun, “Someone for Everyone” has that feel good factor about it. If I had to choose one song, a difficult thing to do, it would be “Without Love”; it has a funky/ soulful vibe to it, it is the stand out track for me. Summing up the quality of this CD, I would have to say it is an experience not to be missed, if you do, it will be at your own pearl!
