Missy Elliott
The Cookbook
3.5 /5
Key tracks: Lose Control, We Run This, Remember When
Missy Elliott’s a one-woman empire; in addition to having the gift of rap, she’s takes on the roles of singing, songwriting and producing as well. On her most recent offering, The Cookbook, her distinct style is accompanied by a star studded supporting cast, including appearances by Fantasia, Ciara, and Mary J. Blige. And it’s her first without producer Timbaland.
By far, the star track on this album is “Lose Control”, featuring Ciara and Fat Man Scoop. It’s a very hot tune, and you can’t help but get the booty shaking to this one! “We Run This” is also a notable song, taking us old school with its retro sound and sample of 80s anthem “Apache”. “Remember When” is a pretty ballad that showcases her decent voice, and “Meltdown” goes to the other end of the spectrum with a sultry, x-rated musical romp that is not for the prudish.
All in all, it’s a decent album. Not one of the best to come out this year, but definitely worth a listen.
