Dr.Dog

Fate

3/5

“Fate” is the fifth album to be released by the quintet from Philadelphia, as they stay true to form and continue to produce all too familiar sounding songs, which are obviously heavily influenced by the “Beatles” and “The Beach Boys”. This is a somewhat double-edged sword, as they pay homage to the genius of Lennon, McCartney, Brian Wilson and their fellow band mates but it is also something of a gamble to try and emulate the successes and admiration of such renowned, legendary artists and rock bands.

The eleven songs on this CD are an enjoyable experience but not in an original sense as Dr Dog remain stagnant in nostalgia and in awe of the aforementioned influential bands. The few songs that stand out are “The Breeze”, which is the opening track, a folk ballad of sorts, with good use of accoustic guitar, the harmonica and the piano. “The Ark” is a song that evokes emotion as the lyrics explore and delve into the issues surrounding God and love, with strong vocals and instrumental moments. “100 years" in some parts is reminiscent of “Sgt Pepper”, a slightly trippy vibe. “From” is almost childlike in lyrical terms, with the chorus of “choo choo train a rolling away” but this I found to be the song that really struck a chord with me; although very simplistic, it was the most memorable track.

“Fate “is undoubtedly a collage of singer songwriters, Toby Leaman and Scott McMicken’s perceptions of the journey of life both past and present and ultimately self discovery and destiny.

I rate this CD 3 out of 5, in respect of the album not showcasing more originality and unique style in terms of the band's growth.
