Tristan Prettyman
By: Shanna
A night of love songs were heard at the Blender theatre, in New York City, on April 10, 2008. Whitley was tonight's opening act. This twenty-three year old Melbourne, Australia native hit the stage with his acoustic guitar at around 8:30, said hello, and went right into his first song. He dedicated the song to a girl named Shelby about "a misguided love of a girl in 1945 Germany." His next song was about his ex-girlfriend, who would write him "punishing, punishing e-mails." This girlfriend was his "first love," who taught him "the difference between skirts and dresses." The song is called "I Remember," which describes his town of 800 people.
Whitley was a very funny guy entertaining the crowd all night with jokes. He interacted with the crowd frequently and even made fun of John Mayer, who he said "talks too much when he is onstage." He dedicated a song about drinking too much abstinence to his band members and friends. He also dedicated his song "Lost In Time" to "New York Girls," with lyrics describing being hypnotized by a girl. Girls screamed for him after each song, shouting how "sexy" he was. Whitley has a very relaxing voice and plays the acoustic guitar very well. He definitely can hold the attention of a crowd all by himself, like he did this night. Whitley is an up and coming artist to keep an ear out for.
Tristan Prettyman is a young and very elegant woman from San Diego, California. She came out onstage by herself at first to perform a song. Tristan was very humble and astonished by how many people were present at the show. She has a very captivating and angelic voice. After the first song was over, her bassist and drummer came out on stage. Their first song together was very soulful and smooth sounding. The band's new record is coming out this upcoming Tuesday, so they played many new songs off the record. The third song of the night was called "You Got Me," which has a very catchy chorus about a male catching the attention of a female. One of the elements that made Tristan's guitar playing sound so smooth was the fact that she plays without a guitar pick. She is very talented, having played professionally now for seven years, in making intricate guitar parts. She used techniques such as slapping and finger plucking on both the electric and acoustic guitar. Tristan was also very funny making youtube references and telling stories about life on the road throughout the set. The band has been touring for over a month now and despite this, they all had great energy. The crowd sang and danced all night. Many of the bands songs such as "Guestcheck" are about love and break ups.
The band received an encore. Tristan once again came out on her own, this time inviting a "special guest" onstage, who she introduced as "G. Love," who is none other than Mr. Jason Mraz. The girls in the audience screamed really loud and the two of them went into their song "Beautiful," which the crowd went insane over. Tristan and Jason have a great stage presence together and sang wonderful harmonics, feeding off one another. The band then came back on stage and they continued to play more songs.
Needless to say, everyone was in a very loving mood once the show was over.
