Matchbox Twenty

W/Alanis Morissette & Mute Math

By: Debbie

The electro-rock band, Mute Math, opened the show. Loud sounds, and strobes showed off this quartets colorful creativity. They had a uniqueness that left the crowd confused. Talented? To do what they did, definitely. Do they have enough to stand on their own two feet, for their own tour? We’ll have to wait and see.

It’s safe to say that more was expected of Alanis. It doesn’t even take one hand to count the amount of songs that sounded decent. With her new songs especially, her vocals could not be heard above the music itself. Her stage presence was even less than admirable. It seemed Alanis only paced back and forth on the stage, and whipped her hair around, which ended up being more annoying than if she had stood in one spot. Her popular internet mini rendition of “My Humps” was rather humourous, with her pink feather boa and money being thrown up all around her.

When Matchbox Twenty hit the stage, the crowd stood in adulation. The difference in sound quality when compared to Alanis was night and day. Rob Thomas has a voice that is so expressive and full of emotion. Live, Thomas sounds just as good as he does on CD. A moving video backdrop provided the needed eye candy. Some songs performed included “How Far We’ve Come,” “All Your Reasons,” “If You’re Gone,” “Unwell,” “Disease” and “Bright Lights.” The new music is good, the old music is good. Matchbox managed to show why they are still here long after their fifteen minutes eclipsed years ago.
