The Ataris - End Is Forever

By: Ashlee
Rating:

Key Tracks: Giving Up On Love, I.O.U. One Galaxy
Although I had never heard of them before being
handed this album, I was hooked at the beginning.
After four already successful albums, they are back,
and better than ever! They sing a lot about relationships
and love in their songs, which is not a problem
as they are very nice to listen to. They have a
good sound to them. Giving up on Love, and
I.O.U. One Galaxy, are fantastic songs (as
are all the other ones ). I like how they re-released
two of their older songs, How I Spent My Summer
Vacation, and Song For A Mix, and turned
them in to newer versions of those songs. This band
has a vocalist who can sing and a band that can
play! No wonder The Ataris keep pumping out the
new albums…. It’s because they can and sound great
when they do! I recommend that you check them out.
Christina Aguilera-Just Be Free
By: Veronica B
Rating:

Key Tracks: "By Your Side," "Just Be Free (Spanish)"
A combination of old dance tracks and soft love
songs don't do too bad in my book of good CDs. And
frankly, this one isn't too far from the top of
my list. I'm personally a BIG fan of Christina and
basically enjoy anything she does, but I'm not afraid
to admit that this CD is outdated. However, I enjoy
it because I love hearing celebrities before they
made it big. I compare my voice to hers and determine
whether I'll be able to be as good as she is right
now. Kind of like a self voice class! However, I
strongly recommend not to purchase this album. Christina
tried to prevent it's release for many years because
it doesn't reflect her current musical style and
they are incomplete. That is very true; On a few
tracks it has noises in the background and you'll
hear her talking sometimes. She doesn't do that
semi-annoying bouncing-from-note-to-note-thing but
it would make her feel great if nobody purchased
it. I can't wait for her sophomore album to come
out. How about you?
Christina Aguilera- My Kind Of Christmas

By:Debbie
Rating:
Key Tracks-Christmas Time, Have yourself a merry
little Christmas
It seems like pop stars have been making Christmas
albums forever. My kind of Christmas was worth the
wait. There are a lot of traditional songs, along
with a few new ones such as “Christmas Time.” Yet
again, Christina has put out an amazing CD that
really shows off her true vocal ability. Even if
you are not a huge fan of Christina Aguilera, this
album will put you in the Christmas mood and makes
you want to sing along. If you don’t already have
a copy in your hot little hands, I suggest you get
yourself a copy now. Don’t miss out.
Christina Aguilera-"Mi Reflejo"
By: Debbie
Rating:

Key Tracks: Mi Reflejo, Genio Atrapado
If you still do not know who Christina is, then
what kind of hole have you been living in? You open
up the newspaper..and "poof!" she's there. You turn
on the television and "poof!," she's there again!
The point is, that pop princess Christina Aguilera
is still on the rise with one of her latest releases
"mi reflejo." One thin is for sure, Christina sure
has outdone herself this time! Christina may not
be singing in englidh (she sings in spanish, obviously!)
but, "mi reflejo" once again proves her incredible
vocal ability. And let me tell you, this gurl can
really sing! "Mi Reflejo" is packed with high energy
conga beats along with amazing ballads. You do NOT
want to miss out on this awesome opportunity to
learn a bit of spanish and hear your favourite songs
sung in a different language. I think "Mi Reflejo"
is an awesome cd. It belongs in everybodys cd collection.
Oh yeah, I almost forgot.."Como un genio atrapado
espero."
Angela Ammons
By: Stefany
Rating:

Key Tracks:Pretend, Someday Soon, Big Girl
Have you ever felt that if you could put your feelings
to a song, everyone would understand you? That you
would feel better about yourself if the beauty of
music conveyed what you felt? Angela Ammons is that
voice. Co-writing half of her songs to her debut
CD, she sings about life, love, and growing up.
Perhaps, the most thought provoking lyrically written
song I’ve ever heard is “Pretend.” Just listening
to the song makes you think. Not only are Angela
lyrics beautiful, her voice is too. Probably best
compared to the vocal stylings of Jessica Simpson
or Jennifer Paige, Angela is declared as the “voice
of the new millennium” This is honestly the best
CD I have ever listened to. Each and every track
is written, sung, and composed so wonderfully, you
would never know that this is Angela’s first CD.
If you like Jessica Simpson, Mandy Moore, Michelle
Branch, or Jennifer Paige, you are bound to love
Angela Ammons.
Anti-Flag
By: Christopher Micheals
Rating:

All you punk-rock fans better hold onto your hats
cuz Anti-Flag is gonna take you for a ride with
this one. This band shows that you can’t go wrong
if you stick with an anti-government theme, like
many other great bands (ex. Rage). This album is
filled with 13 tracks of U.S. bashing fun. This
album is fairly solid and flows well. Each track
is fairly different from the one before, and the
vocals are a little coarser than your usual poppy
punk. So it makes for a nice unique sound. Personally
I love their bass lines, and my favorite track would
have to be 11, Bring out your dead, but that’s
just me. If I really nitpick, the only thing that
bothered me would be the overuse of guitar slides
in their song intros, but other than that it’s an
awesome album.
Atc- "Planet Pop"
By: Tracy C.
Rating:

Key Tracks: " Around The World (la la la la la)",
" My Heart Beats Like a Drum (dum dum dum)", Notte
D'amore Can Te", "Mind Machine"
A lot of you may not know who this awesome quartet
is, but I'm sure you have heard their smash hit
" Around The World (la la la la la)." Their premier
album is filled with great beats and catchy tunes.
There are a few soft ballads, but it's mostly composed
of songs that make you want to get up and dance!
The members of ATC are from all over the world (Italy,
England, Australia, and new Zealand),so the songs
have a very international flavor to them. So, if
you like international music and love songs with
great beats get this album! If you don't, you'll
really be missing out!
A Walk To Remember- Soundtrack
By: Debbie
Rating:

Key Tracks: Cry,Only Hope, I Dare You To Move
There seems to be a fine line when it comes to soundtracks.
They are either really good, or extremely bad. The
sound track for "A walk to remember" definitely
lands on the extremely good side. Compiled mainly
of songs by Mandy Moore and Switchfoot, this sountrack
proves to be "A" quality. Each track has the ability
to bring you back to the movie and help you re-live
all the emotions you were feeling within. It also
features tracks by artists such as Rachel Lampa,
The New Radicals and Toploader. After seeing "A
Walk To Remember," I knew that I had to own this
soundtrack. I was right. Now that I have heard it,
I want to listen to it over and over. I may not
be able to talk you into seeing the movie or buying
this soundtrack, but one thing is for sure: It will
get a lot of playing time in my stereo.
Amanda- "Everybody Doesn't"

By:Kenneth
Rating:

Key Tracks:Start It All Over, Everybody Doesn't
Brooke Allison and Amanda. Two teen queens that
popped onto the music scene at almost the same time,
yet they fell off just as fast. I would've thought
either of them would had a debut single that was
actually GOOD. However, I knew Amanda's album was
bad from the reviews, online clips, and even "Everybody
Doesn't" which was on Rick Dees' Top 40. But foolish
me, I had to go out and buy a used copy for a discounted
price because I assumed it "wasn't THAT bad" because
if you've read the lyrics to "The Way I Am," then
you'll think she had some class for teen-related
songs. "The Way I Am" probably looked good on paper,
but the song is a mess using a Latin feel which
doesn't mold for the song. The debut single (and
last) "Everybody Doesn't" isn't fun nor catchy but
it does have a good moral. However, all preaching
quickly dissolves when Amanda exclaims "Come a little
closer" and "Got my hands on the trigger/You ain't
got no place to run" on track 2, "Can't Stop My
Love". If anyone is looking for something that isn'
into buying it.. but if you must, try to find a
copy in the discount rack.
Auto Pilot Off
By: Ashlee
Rating:

Key Tracks: Long Way To Fall, Wide Awake
Autopilot off has taken off on a good note with
their latest EP. I never heard of them until this
album came to me, but right from the track Long
way to fall, its serious appeal hooked me. The
vocals and the usage of their instruments is outstanding.
The style of music is punk-rock. Every song on this
album is very easy to get into. Long way to fall,
in my opinion, is one of the best songs I’ve heard
lately as it just has a lot of beat, rhyme and is
not the mainstream punk-rock you hear today. Also,
you can really relate to their lyrics as they are
very inspirational. Wide Awake is also another
great song because the introduction of it really
grasps your attention, and it holds it all the way
until the end.If you don’t already have this CD,
go out and pick yourself up a copy because you will
be missing out if you don’t!

Backstreet Boys - Greatest Hits
By: Debbie
Rating:

Every genre is being over flooded with Greatest Hits
albums. This time, it's The Backstreet Boys. Wether
its the end of the backstreet boys or not, that's
up to you, but I don't see them going anywhere anytime
soon. The CD is composed of all the popular songs
which have been continuously played on the radio over
and over again. One new hit, "Drowning" is offered
on their Greatest Hits album, but why release a totally
unknown song on a Greatest Hits album, rather than
a new release? I'm not a diehard fan, but I was a
bit disappointed with their selection of songs. Whatever
happened to other songs such as the alternate version
of "I want it that way?" and "She Said," which was
only released on The Burger King Backstreet Boys CDs?
Overall, it is a great Greatest Hits album, but a
better selection of songs, by just a couple, would
have made it a five star, rather than a four star
album.
Backstreet Boys-"Black & Blue"
By: Diana
Rating:

Key Tracks:Shape of my heart, The Call
Say "bye bye bye" to *Nsync for a while, because
the Backstreet boys are back! BSB once again proves
with Black and Blue that they have the talent..and
power.. to stay in the spotlight, and that they
intend to stay in the spotlight for a long time
yet. In fact, in the first week of sales, Black
and Blue smashed..and I do mean SMASHED many records!
They are also now officially the very first band
ever to sell over 5 million copies of their album
only in one week. Black and Blue is packed with
a miz of love-ballads and catchy fast tracks that
just make you want to get up and dance! Even if
you are not a huge fan of pop music, I assure you..you
will not be disappointed! The Backstreet Boys may
not play their own instruments, but they sure do
know how to write and sing! The BSB wrote many of
the songs, both as a group and individually. If
you do not go to a local record store and buy this
cd..you don't know what you are missing. But it,
or live your life with regret for a llllooonnnnggg
time.
BBMak-"Sooner or Later"
By: Vanessa
Rating:

Key Tracks: Still on your side, Back Here
What do you get when you put three guys, two guitars,
and one smooth sound? The latest British sensation,
BBMak. Their latest release of "Still on your Side"
is currently climbing up music charts around the
globe, with the exception of their native land,
England, because currently "Back Here" is their
latest release. Their album "Sooner or Later" is
considerably good for a "rookie" album. As opposed
to their "boy band" (and I used this term -- boy
band -- lightly) rivalries, Backstreet Boys' and
'N Sync's first album, "Sooner or Later" contains
none of the annoying beats that are guarenteed to
get stuck in your head (*NOTE: No offense to Backstreet
Boys and 'N Sync fans, but you have to admit, the
first albums were kind of, ehhh) Their album is
filled with twelve well written songs, and the best
part is that majority of the songs written on the
album are indeed written by BBMak themselves. However,
most of the songs on the album are considerably
sad, especially the song, "Love is Leaving" and
"Love on the Outside" But the band does sing to
prove that love is not always what it should be.
On a scale of one to ten, "Sooner or Later" is a
strong eight and-a-half, give or take the nine.
So if you have not already bought the CD, it's time
to go out and get it!
Blink 182- Take off your pants and jacket

By: Debbie
Rating:

Key tracks: The Rock Show
If you‘re looking for something different than “Enema
of the state,” you won’t find it here. Blink 182
have definitely found their winning formula and
will stick with it. Their first single off their
new album “The Rock Show” is definitely one that
has everyone snatching a copy of “Take off your
pants and jacket” from a local record store. “Anthem
part two” is another excellent song that I can see
being released in the future. If you loved their
last album “Enema of the state,” you’ll love this
one. If you are looking for a total change musically
in Blink 182, this album is definitely not for you.
Bif Naked- Purge
By: Debbie
Rating:

Key Tracks: I Love Myself Today, October Song
This Vancouver-based singer-actress is back with
her latest release "Purge." Some people may not
like the sound change from her previous album that
had hot singles such as "Spaceman," but I think
Bif has made a huge step forward. "I love myself
today," her first single is quickly rising the charts.
All songs are releasable material, so Bif won’t
be out of the spotlight anytime soon. In the music
business, there is a huge shortage of female Rock
Stars. With "Purge," Bif proves that she has enough
attitude to make up for any musical shortcomings.
Bowling For Soup – Drunk Enough To Dance

By: Debbie
Rating:

Key Tracks: Girl All the Bad
Guys Want, Emily
Drunk Enough to Dance
only contains catchy punk pop, giving Blink 182 a
challenge for something to top. Starting off with
the powerful I Don’t Wanna
Rock and Emily,
one of the best songs on Drunk
Enough to Dance, is a sure-fire hit amongst
every girl out there named Emily. Girl
All the Bad Guys Want is nothing short
of a smash hit across the globe. On
and On (About You) is lacking due to the
fact that it’s nothing but total mainstream punk pop,
nothing original there. She's
Got a Boyfriend is way too similar to Reel
Big Fish’s track, of which also has a very similar
title. Many tracks are very similar, both lyrically
and musically. However, its wry lyrics are what separate
Bowling For Soup from ‘slacker power pop' which greatly
emerged, especially over the last couple of years.
The gentle rock BFS used to produce has almost completely
disappeared. Either way, I like it.
Boyz II Men – Full Circle

By: Debbie
Rating:

Key Tracks: Color of Love,
Vibin’
Boyz II Men definitely are not stopping to take any
chances with their newest release, titled Full Circle.
With their first release through Arista and L.A. Reid,
Boys II Men top their 2000 release, titled Nathan,
Michael, Shawn and Wanya. Full Circle
is totally satisfying, as it includes everything you
would expect from the boys. From Vibin’
to Color of Love,
they prove they are not old news and out of the scene,
they have just aged. However, there are a couple let-downs:
I’m Ok, Your Ok
and Luv N U are
boring and non original. I'll
Show You, is an excellent demonstration
of what these guys can accomplish harmonically. Face
it, Boys II Men are back.
Michelle Branch-The Spirit
Room
By:Dawn
Rating:
Key Tracks-Everywhere, You Set Me Free, Something
to Sleep to
I saw Michelle open up for Evan and Jaron back in
June in San Francisco. This girl rocks live and
she has a very strong and beautiful voice. I have
to say I enjoy her live performance better than
the CD, but she writes her own lyrics and music
and that much I can respect. She is a very talented
young woman, although she does write for her age
group. That's not a bad thing because I can definitely
see her potential. In one song (You Get Me) she
sings: You look inside my wild mind, Never knowing
what you'll find, And still you want me all the
time. She writes about love, acceptance, and her
place in the world. She is a welcome change to the
pop fluff we hear Everywhere. Keep your eye on Michelle,
there's lots more to come from this artist.
Brandy - Full Moon
By: Debbie
Rating:

Key Tracks: "What about us?" and "He Is"
“FULL MOON,” the album everyone has been eagerly
anticipating since Brandy’s last release is now
here. With her new found sound: raw, stylish and
edgy, her new single “What about us?” is impressing
millions everywhere. Working with the likes of Rodney
Jerkins (a longtime Brandy collaborator) on “It’s
not worth It,” which challenges copiers to come
up with something as new and funky, and Warren Campbell’s
(of Mary and Dru Hill Fame) ballads “He Is” and
“When you touch me” prove that “FULL MOON” will
continue to do nothing but soar. Unlike “Never Say
Never,” which seemed to stick to her roots, “FULL
MOON” definitely shakes those loose leaves free.

The Calling - Camino Palmero

By: Dawn
Rating:

Key Tracks: Adrienne, Wherever
You Will Go, Stigmatized
There's no way you've missed out on hearing Wherever
You Will Go (also found on the Coyote Ugly
soundtrack), it's been all over radio and way over
played. Great song though, about a loved one who has
passed away. Wherever You Will
go almost has a religious tone to it, at least in
my opinion. Aaron (the lead singer) has quite a mature
voice for someone so young, and belting out these
various songs show his range as well. Adrienne
is an angry song about vengeance when a girlfriend
has cheated. Could It Be Any
Harder is a haunting song with lyrics such
as "Could it be any harder to say goodbye and without
you, Could it be any harder to watch you go, to face
what's true.....If I only had one more day." Stigmatized
deals with being an outcast. Alex and Aaron
make an interesting song writing pair, and the cd
has much more to offer than Wherever
You Will Go. Eva
Cassidy - Songbirds

By: Serena
Rating:

Key Tracks: Fields of Gold,
Wayfaring Stranger, Songbird
In 1996, Eva Cassidy tragically died of melanoma at
the age of 33. Two years later, Songbird was released.
An album of Cassidy's best cuts, it contains traditional
songs as well as covers. Cassidy puts her distinctive
spin on all of them. Fields
of Gold, a Sting cover, was Michelle Kwan's
musical choice for her long program performance at
the Olympics. Cassidy's version of the traditional
folk song, Wayfaring Stranger, takes on a life of
its own. The title track, Songbird,
is a beautiful love song which was written by Christine
McVie of Fleetwood Mac. Although Eva Cassidy was forced
to leave this world prematurely, her music lives on
much to the benefit of listeners across the world.
Mariah Carey-Merry Christmas

By:Melody
Rating:

Key Tracks:Baby Please Come Home" and "Miss You
Most"
I love Mariah Carey's Christmas album, "Merry Christmas."
Released in 1994, it has sold many copies. In December,
people listen to Christmas carols while decorating
the tree and wrapping gifts. Why not listen to a
pop diva's version of the same traditional songs,
like "Silent Night," "O Holy Night," and "Santa
Claus is Coming to Town?" One of my favorites is
"Baby Please Come Home" which is a tune about having
someone to be with during the holiday season. With
Mariah's beautiful voice, run to the record store
and pick it up just in time for Christmas!
Mariah Carey - Charmbracelet

By: Debbie
Rating:

Key Tracks: Through The Rain,
Clown, Boy (I Need You)
Mariah is back with her greatly anticipated, outstanding
comeback. Charmbracelet
is not only an expression of her life this past couple
years, but is living proof that Mariah really does
possess the voice of an angel. Through
The Rain magically gives you the strength
to believe in yourself through anything. Clown
is the tasteful way to hit someone where it really
hurts. Bringing On The Heartache
is one of the best covers ever done by an artist.
My Saving Grace
is nothing less of a powerful gospel ballad. I
Only Wanted is a slow track and very romantic.
Through The Rain (remix)
does have a good beat and vocals, but still doesn’t
top the original version. Mariah Carey definitely
gets better as each day passes. Not only is she a
superb writer and producer, but she sure is one hell
of a vocalist.
Vanessa Carlton - Be Not Nobody

By: Debbie
Rating:

Key Tracks: Pretty Baby, Twilight
and A Thousand Miles
It’s not hard for many to pass singer-songwriter-instrumentalist
Vanessa Carlton off as just another pretty face with
a delightful voice. However, don’t let anything blind
you. This former ballerina goes much deeper. Pretty
Baby is an awesome ballad, perfect for
any couple, though slightly sappy: Pretty
Baby/Don't you leave me/I have been saving smiles
for you. "Prince
is sizzling. Twilight
is the best display of her talent. Rinse
greatly reminded me of Ani DiFranco. Ordinary
Day and A Thousand
Miles display a majestic grace. Though
the cover of Paint It Black
wasn’t too appealing, Vanessa has an oddly delightful,
accent mannered voice that will not have her mistaken
for any other artist.
Nick Carter – Now or Never

By: Debbie
Rating:

Key Tracks: Help Me, Do I Have
To Cry For You
Think Bon Jovi rock, but not overly hard rock. And
yes, Carter’s new album starts with a very similar
riff that you would hear from the ever-famous Nirvana.
Help Me, the guitar
driven first single has already reached amazing heights,
but was surprisingly no indication of what was ahead
with this release, which was greatly anticipated by
teeny boppers and older folk alike. The ballad Do
I Have To Cry For You is definitely Bryan
Adams reminiscent. Who Needs
The World shows Carter still treasures
his roots with The Backstreet Boys. Is
It Saturday Yet was extremely corny. Girls
In America sounds more like something Aaron
should be singing, not Nick. Miss
America, like many of the tracks, refer
to only one thing: girls. If you’re picturing, or
hoping for, an I Want It That
Way, on this CD, it won’t be found. Carter’s
boybandless days look fairly bright - after all, what
better timing could he have? Like the CD’s title,
it’s Now or Never.
The Corrs - Live in Dublin
By: Diana
Rating:

The Corrs (Three sisters and a brother) have definitely
taken celtic music to a new level. On their latest
release, "Live In Dublin," the Corrs have honored
traditional Irish music by re-making it for listeners
who are accustom to pop music. U2's Bono duets with
Andrea (lead Vocalist) on the Ryan Adam's song "When
The Stars Go Blue" and "Summer Wine," an oldie which
was previously performed by Nancy Sinatra and Lee
Hazelwood. This album is extremely impressive. With
over 23 million previous albums sold worldwide,
the Corrs truly are international superstars.
Creed - Weathered

By: Debbie
Rating:

Key Tracks: Don’t Stop Dancing, One Last Breath,
My Sacrifice
Within the Christian rock genre, Creed remains at
the top. Bullets, which begins Weathered,
is a powerful rock song, explodes in your face.
My Sacrifice is extremely inspirational and
uplifting, as is Don’t Stop Dancing, which
tells younger people not to give up, to fight for
what you want, and for what you feel is right. Signs,
Freedom Fighter, and Hide are also powerful
rock tracks. Freedom Fighter is more of what
I would call “classic Creed.” For those who prefer
softer songs Don’t Stop Dancing, Lullaby
and One Last Breath are perfect for you.
Many have compared Creed to Pearl Jam and the Tea
Party. However, Creed isn’t your typical over-rated
band. Listening to Creed gives one the impression
that they are about quality, not quantity, and are
here to please their fans- not top 40 radio.
Crazy Town- Darkhorse
By: Debbie
Rating:

Key Tracks: Drowning, Skulls
and Stars
Most people are able to recall the release of “Butterfly,”
and the mixed reaction fans gave. Darkhorse is nothing
like Butterfly. For those that did not like that one
track, you can sigh with relief. Though the lyrics
are mostly cliché and the track quality differs from
time to time, Crazy Town are back with a decent release.
Tracks such as "Drowning" and "Waste of My Time" are
total anthems. "Drowning," addresses the sudden success
“Butterfly” brought them and the rollercoaster ride
that followed. "You’re The One" and "Them Days" will
be easily accepted as party tracks. Waste of My Time
and Sorry are an excellent example of “80’s Hair Metal.”
Aside from all that, it’s no surprise there are still
releasable tracks, such as Hurt You So Bad, and Skulls
and Stars. Forget all the critics that complain they
sound like Linkin Park. Forget all the critics that
accuse them of ripping off Limp Bizkit. Pop the CD
in and see for yourself.
Billy Currington

By: Debbie
Rating:

Key Tracks: Walk A Little Straighter, I Got a
Feeling
Billy Currington delivers a crisp clear voice along
with beautiful chords and melodies that make me
want to play it while I drive, do housework, fall
asleep, or drink my coffee. Starting off with "I
Got a Feeling," your toes get tapping. Bringing
a smile to ones face and implanting an encouraging
song in ones mind, it was the ultimate track to
get the ball rolling. "Walk a Little Straighter”
has some incredible imagery of what this boy growing
up faced with a father that was addicted to alcohol.
From tracks such as "Growing up down there", “Walk
a Little Straighter” and "Where the Girls Are,"
his fantastically melodic voice transports you right
to the heart of your own life: from that first true
love, embarrassment over a loved one's addiction,
to the love of home and excitement of youth. Though
his song writing won’t make him stand out, Billy
possesses amazing talent; with a freshness that
the industry needs at a time of Controversial artist
and Artists wars.

Craig David - Slicker Than Your Average

By: Debbie
Rating:

Key Tracks: You Don’t Miss
Your Water (till the water runs dry), What’s Your
Flava?
Craig David became nothing less of a national sensation
with his first release, Born
To Do It, and born to do it he was. Now,
he’s back to prove he’s Slicker
Than Your Average. Taking more serious
issues to heart, David talks about things such as
the pitfalls of being famous (“I’m not the man I used
to be”) and the never-ending press ("Why are you watching
me when you should just let me be Craig"). However,
he still hasn’t forgotten his ladies. The ballad You
don't miss your water (till the well runs dry)
is anything but sappy, while still sensitive. His
new sound is harder and more suitable for clubs and
all around play. David’s new-found Flava makes Slicker
Than Your Average more interesting, by
far.
Craig David - Born To Do
It
By: Debbie
Rating:

Key Tracks: Fill Me In, Seven Days, Rewind
When Craig David titled his album Born To Do
It, he definitely knew what he was talking about.
Born To Do It pulls you in and doesn’t spit
you out until the end of the Craig David experience.
Fill Me In starts out the album on the right
note. 7 Days is hot, while Can't Be Messing
Around and Rewind are just as amazing.
Craig David knows how to sing, doesn’t overdo it
and doesn’t try to portray what he isn’t. Craig
David sets a new sound for other artists out there
to try and beat. Can they do it? I guess we’ll just
have to wait to find out.
David Matthew's Band -
Under The Table And Dreaming

By: Dawn
Rating:

Key Tracks: What Would You Say, Satellite, Ants
March
Dave Matthews Band has been around for a while and
Under the Table And Dreaming contained some of their
best songs. The Best of What's Around is a beautiful
song about positivity no matter what is happening
around you. Ants March became popular on MTV after
the weird video they released. My favorite song
is Satellite...."winter's cold, spring erases, and
the calm away by the storm is chasen, everything
good needs replacing". These songs are beautifully
written and the violin additions make for a uniqueness
you can only get with the Dave Matthews Band.
Dido - No Angel
By: Serena
Rating:

Key Tracks: Here With Me, Hunter, I'm No Angel
You're probably already familiar with Dido through
the sampling of her song Thank You in Eminem's
hit Stan. Or you may have noticed her track
Here With Me playing as the theme song for
the television show Roswell. Well, the rest
of the tracks on No Angel are more of the
same catchy melodies and ethereal instrumentation.
Although the lyrics, dealing mostly with love and
relationships, are occasionally somewhat less than
inspired, Dido's offering is much appreciated amidst
the teen pop wasteland. No Angel is one of
those good junkyard finds.

Believe is no doubt
Disturbed's true musical arrival. Believe
may not be like their last release, but it still has
edge, and it still takes risks, if not more so than
before. The lyrics have matured while their incredible
mix of rock radio-friendly tracks left nothing but
a jaw-dropping impression on me, especially with the
opening track, Prayer.
Vocalist David Draiman bleats out the band's messages
of everything from non-conformity to individuality
with such a passion it must be noticed. Intoxication
will please fans who liked Disturbed’s ‘darker’ side.
Disturbed are just as aggressive here as they were
on their debut. They may have lost some of their ‘darkness,’
but in the process they have definitely created some
musical history.
Dream – “It Was All A Dream”

Key Tracks: “In My Dreams”, “This is Me”, “I Don’t
Like Anyone”, “Pain” and “When I Get There”
For the first pop act on Puff Daddy’s Bad Boy Entertainment,
the past couple of months have been a whirlwind
of success. Dream (Ashley Poole, Diana Ortiz, Holly
Arnstien, and Melissa Schuman) blew up the Billboard
Hot 100 singles chart to No. 2 with “He Loves U
Not”, the first single from their debut CD: It
Was All A Dream. The album debuted at No. 6
on the Billboard 200 album chart and that wasn’t
just because of luck. The 17-track CD features four
interludes, the “He Loves U Not” remix and 12 other
excellent pop/R&B tracks. Great ballads such as
“When I Get There”, “Miss You” and “How Long” show
off the group’s vocal harmonies, but the faster
songs that dominate the record certainly get more
of the praise. Songs such as “In My Dreams”, “This
Is Me” and “Do You Wanna Dance” are up-beat songs
great for dancing to and they really satisfy your
pop needs. The CD also features an interlude on
which the group says a prayer, showing their solid
roots. The all-girl group opened for *NSYNC last
fall and is now a part of 98°’s spring tour, so
keep your eyes open for them. It Was All A Dream
is a great CD that definitely deserves a spot in
your collection.

Key tracks: "It happens everytime" and "I say Yeah"
This album is one either you will love or hate.
People who like pure-pop will love this cd, others
who hate boy bands, well you should probably just
pass on this one. Dream Streets first cd was recorded
when these guys were only 13-15 years old, and their
voices hadn't changed yet. But I must say it's quite
an impressive debut. Most of these upbeat songs
deal with the pressures of teen crushes. There's
the ever-popular "It Happens Everytime," which,
if you're young you've probably heard it. "I Say
Yeah" is their second single, which is probably
just as good or better than their first. There are,
of course some ballads. Track 6, "Jennifer Goodbye,"
is a powerful ballad about breaking up with a girl
because she only uses him as a "fallback guy." Track
13 "Dream On" sends a great message to follow your
dreams and to never give up. Those are just some
of the highlights of this album. These guys may
be manufactured, but I must say, these guys do have
talent for such a young age.
Drowning Pool - Sinner

By: Chris Micheals

Key Tracks: Sinner, Tear Away
Here is a debut album like no other. Sinner
has been received by the public with incredible enthusiasm.
The album hit platinum within 6 weeks of its release
and both singles (Bodies
and Tear away) are
getting major airtime. Honestly I would have to say
this metal album’s success is due to how straight
forward it is. It is very catchy and not so complicated
that listeners would have a hard time relating. I
wouldn’t be surprised if we saw a few more singles
from this album. Most songs are radio-friendly, such
as Sinner. My favourite
songs would have to be Sinner
and Tear Away even
though every song is fairly solid. Drowning Pool show’s
a lot of potential and I definitely cannot wait for
their next release.

Key Tracks: You
Their Music is something that I’ve never heard before.
It has the country music touch, but it also sounds
a little like pop music. The first time I saw this
band was on Mike Bullard. I thought they were too
country for me, but when I got the CD in the mail
and listened to it,I turned the other way. I may
only have One Song under Key Tracks, but you would
have to listen to that song to understand why it
out plays any other song on the CD. The song “You”
has a strong meaning behind it, no matter who wrote
it. The song “Live it up” which is their first single
is also a very good upbeat song. If you watch the
video you will see Lou Pearlman in the video. Him
and Kenny Rodgers would be the people who put this
band together. That is where you can definitely
see where the pop and country sounds come. Some
say they are the only ‘country boy band’. But I’d
have to say they aren’t. They are 5 guys put together
to make great music.

Eminem – The Eminem Show

By: Debbie
Rating:

Key Tracks: Cleaning Out My
Closet, Without Me
The king of controversy is back and takes off exactly
from where his last CD left off. Cleaning
Out My Closet is none other than another
defensive song against his mother, who he thinks is
fake and a sell-out. Hearing him continually diss
his wife over and over is starting to get old, yet
it still remains fresh and funny in the minds of some.
His outrageous exaggeration used to get a rise out
of people is now nothing other than brutal honesty.
"The smartest thing that I did was to take the bullets
out of that gun, 'cause I'd of killed them. I would've
shot Kim and him both" shows this newfound honest
brutality. I was impressed when Hailie’s
Song, a song for his daughter, came on.
It shows the softer side of Eminem, a side I thought
he wouldn’t show. Say Goodbye
To Hollywood discusses the choices one
makes. His CD - decent. However, his choice of topic
desperately needs a change. Be careful, don’t rub
Eminem the wrong way or you’ll be the next topic in
one of his hit singles. When you hit a skit, do your
self a favour and press “skip.”
Joy Enriquez - Self-titled

By:Kenneth
Rating:

Key Tracks:“What Do You Want,” “Uh Oh,” “With This
Love”
In the pass couple of weeks, one cannot escape Latino
singing sensation Joy Enriquez. Nabbing a reoccurring
role on the WB’s highly rated family drama “7th
Heaven” and dating baseball player Derek Jeter,
it would come to a surprise to many that Enriquez
has released a fun and very danceable self-titled
album last September. One may have already heard
the Beyoncé Knowles co-written “in-your-face” track
for Enriquez, “What Do You Want” currently blasting
through hip hop and top 40 radio stations. Or maybe
the heavy beats of commercial singles “Tell Me How
You Feel” and “Shake Up The Party,” which cast a
dance floor spell over Australia and Asia. However
when the singles grab your attention, the album
suffers from packaged generic fillers such as “I
Can’t Believe,” “Without You,” and the Rodney Jerkin‘s
formulaic “Between You and Me.” Don’t be mistaken,
there are RnB gems snuck in between the rotten apples
like the catchy as molasses “Uh Oh” and the diva
attitude “Situation.” Although Enriquez’ voice does
not blow you away in some RnB flavored tunes, it
all comes down to the spine-chilling ballad "Losin'
The Love" and gospel finale “With This Love” where
her soul shines through. "I want to make music that
lifts you up!“ said Enriquez. Surely, she succeeded
her goal with an album, although far from a classic,
simply for pure enjoyment.
Evan and Jaron - We Haven't
Heard of You Either

By: Dawn
Rating:

Key Tracks: There You Are Again, Nothing And
Everything
The title of the cd clearly expresses their sense
of humor. Evan and Jaron's first major label release
in 1998 included some of their best songs. Only
One, and then She Says, was released and got air
play. There are songs about icons such as Andy Warhol
and James Dean (could have been James Dean). Songs
about prior loves, Nothing and Everything, and songs
about dealing with moving on, Couldn't Care Less
About and Is It All That Great Without Me? My favorite
song, Nothing and Everything includes the violin
in the background. If you're an Evan and Jaron fan,
this is one of their best releases. You can purchase
the cd at www.evanandjaron.com in the merchandise

Eve – Eveolution

By: Debbie

Key Tracks: Gangsta Lovin’,
Ryde Away
Eve is your mainstream, hip hop princess. Has she
made the full Eve-Olution
she claims? I think so. Eve-Olution
reveals a more mature, stronger woman, by far, with
more life experience and two successful albums under
her belt. Though the skits are a terrible waste of
space, Gangsta Lovin’
is extremely radio friendly, and not just because
it’s featuring Alicia Keys. The flirtatious banter
of Figure You Out
shows Eve kicks ass and doesn’t care who knows. Ryde
Away shows off Eve’s ‘hardcore’ side. On
Let This Go, Eve
speaks of an ex-boyfriend who couldn’t handle her
being in the spotlight. It's good to see that Eve
knows how to stay true to her street roots and has
definitely given me a hope for rap
Eve-"Scorpion"
By: Monnie

Key Tracks:"Who's That Girl?" "Let me blow ya mind"
"Gangsta B****"
Well, it seems as if Eve, the girl *Ruff Ryder*
has done it again! She has come out with a great
solo album once more with great tracks. Her biggest
hit out right now, "Who's That Girl?" has hit #1
spots all over the nation. It has a cool dance rythm
along with great lyrics, expressing how everyone
wants to know "who's that girl". Eve also puts in
a little bit of a funky edge on her new album, "Scorpion",
by doing a song with Gwen Stefani, called "Let me
Blow ya Mind" And she is definetly not letting down
her bad-girl rep with the song "Gangsta B****".
In man people's opinions, it's one of the best albums
out there in the hip-hop industry! Like the title
of the album's first, impressive single "Who's That
Girl" implies, Eve's identity is by no means a known
quantity. She's got plenty of room to grow, leaving
everyone wondering about her next move - even as
she impresses everyone.

Fat Joe - J.O.S.E
By: Debbie
Rating:

With Fat Joe's successful formula, he has gained a
lot of recognition and respect and will continue to
impress with this fourth album, titled J.O.S.E. (Jealous
Ones Still Envy). "We Thuggin'" was an immediate hit
and featured none other than R Kelly. His latest release,
"What's Luv?" features Ja Rule and Ashanti and is
yet another example his neverending talent. However,
not all tracks, such as "Fight Club" and "King Of
N.Y." are as good, mainly because they lack origionality.
The same things seem to be repeated song after song.
It is a depressing trend recently, with every group
sticking to beats and lyrics that work, instead of
trying to break new ground and try something new.
Fat Joe - Loyalty

By: Debbie
Rating:

Key Tracks: Crush Tonight,
Bust at You
Fat Joe has never had a totally successful career.
If it wasn’t for What’s Luv,
which was probably his most popular song and featured
Ashanti, I wouldn’t even know of his existence. Crush
Tonight, featuring Ginuwine, is hardly
even comparable to What's Luv,
but decent nonetheless. Bust
at You is hot and the addition of Scarface
makes it even hotter. In Take
A Look At My Life, the hook isn’t exactly
great. TS Piece
is only there for the sole purpose of promoting Tony
Sunshine, a new member on Fat Joes’s label. It’s horrible.
Fat Joe may not have risen above his last album. However,
Loyalty is still
decent.
Fenix*Tx
By: Debbie
Rating:

This new album is a lot heavier than their other
album in places, while still reproducing some of
the sounds of the first. Phoebe Cates is fast paced
and it starts "Lechuza" off in a good mood. "Beating
A Dead Horse" is a bit heavier, but doesn't disturb
the album's pace. "A Song For Everyone”, is the
closest sounding track to their last album. While
most bands tend to move more to the pop side, Fenix
TX have done the opposite. Lechuza is much more
harder than their previous. I did find it quite
difficult to tell when some track changes were as
a lot of the tracks are similar, but still good,
each with their own unique twist. If you like this
genre of music, this is a CD you must add to your
collection.
Fieldy's Dream
By: Debbie
Rating:
When I popped "Fieldy's Dream" into my cd player,
I got a lot less than I expected. I expected it
to be a top notch, high quality CD. Coming out of
Epic records, and being the drummer of KoRn, I don't
understand as to how the record comany, or Fieldy,
expect to make any money off this cd, or gain any
recognition. Track after track, I didn't even make
it through the entire song. More time is spent talking,
than there is singing, attempting to rap- or whatever
you want to call it. Every song is about drugs and
girls. If you're thinking "Afroman style," you're
wrong. "Are you talking to me" and "You Saved Me"
does the same stuff that all the other songs have,
which is to rhyme anything they can whether its
good or not. All songs are extremely similar, beat
and lyric-wise. More origionality within the lyrics
and beats would have made this cd be better quality.
How this CD got out there in the first place, I'll
never know. One thing is for sure though: there
is a lot more unsigned talent out there, with better
quality music than you will find on this cd. It's
just too bad so many horrible songs were chosen.

Fuel- "Something Like Human": Try....."Something
Like Godly" I didn't think anything could be better
than their previous album "Sunburn". I was wrong.
With their sophmore effort, Fuel has truly created
a work of art. From the dark and sad "Hemmorhage

has it all. Heavy guitars, great lyrics, awesome
melody, and a perfect sound. Two thumbs up for "Something
Like Human."
The Full Nine

By: Ashlee
Rating:

Key Tracks: Not Over
The latest sound to hit the rock and roll world
has to be The Full Nine. This debut album certainly
leaves a good impression in our minds that this
band has what it takes to hit it big. Instead of
going with the general negative lyrics most bands
choose to use, they seem to use positive lyrics
in their music. Speaking of their lyrics, they can
be heard very clearly in all of their songs, and
most new bands usually have the instrumental drowning
out the vocal. Intelligent songs and tight riffs
make their debut total ear candy. One of the best
songs on this album has to be Not over. Another
good track is Coffee, you don't hear too
many songs about drinking coffee, which makes them
by far very creative. This cd is certainly not disappointing
at all and I recommend that you all grab a copy
and experience this for yourself! Their sound is
truly unique. A big thanks to The Full Nine for
not sounding like the next Nickleback.

Featuring various artists such as Cake, Raine Maida

by some of today's most successful contemporary folk
rock/pop artists. Sarah McLachlan, one of the other
featured artists, is able to take any song and leave
you breathless. The Barenaked Ladies take “La La La

featuring John Ondrasik of Five For Fighting even
features kids vocals, possibly those of his son.

Gob- "The World According To"

By: Deniz
Rating:

Key Tracks: For the Moment, I Hear You Calling, Sleepyhead
A successful punk band right out of Vancouver, Canada,
The World According To Gob is a great CD to show Gob's
awesome talents. Band members Theo and Tom switch
singing vocals on different songs creating a different
sound for each song. The guitars, also played by Tom
and Theo, are really creative too - no two songs are
the same. A couple of songs on the CD don't seem as
good as Gob can do, but overall it's a really awesome
CD, and worth the money.
Godsmack- “Awake”
By: Angela T
Rating:

Key Tracks: Greed, Mistakes and “Bad Magic”
The four-member boy band- Godsmack is not your ordinary
sweet baby- faced boy band. In fact they have become
even harder with their second album, “Awake.” Godsmack’s
1998 self-titled album gave off a spiritual-urban
like ora that carved a new sound in the rock industry.
I thought the differences between each song helped
to make the album truly unique. The disc’s single
“Whatever” even became the longest running single
on the Billboards Top 10. When word of a new Godsmack
album hit, everyone was exhilarated! “We have the
same Godsmack groove, but this album is tougher,
more in your face.” Explains lead singer Sully and
mastermind behind Godsmack. In Awake Godsmack is
showing much more aggressiveness, truly a defined
reflection of what these guys are really about.
I particularly admire their new album because there
is absolutely no rap, techno or fillers. The album
is a consistent surge of pulsating heavy rock that
will make your hair rise. The albums lyrics are
also a twist of expression; they give off a truly
deep sound of what the band is feeling. Songs like
“Greed,” “Mistakes,” and “Bad Magick” are written
from experiences and an indication of what Sully
has always felt. Not only are the songs great but
Godsmack’s first video “Awake” also represents the
whole album. It was shot in a disgusting, almost
dilapidated dump that was just perfect for the video!
The place reflected what the band is trying to get
across and by the sounds of it I think they came
through with this one. If you are contemplating
on whether or not to buy “Awake” I suggest you run
out of your house and buy it right now! There is
no wrong doing with this album, it is a Godsmack
masterpiece!
Goldfinger - Open Your
Eyes

By: Ashlee
Rating:

Key Tracks: Open Your Eyes, It's Your Life
Your eyes will really open wide to Goldfinger’s
new Open Your Eyes album! Their hit radio
song right now is open your eyes, which seemed
to do really well! The whole punk rock cd contains
really well written lyrics, which are well supported
by the instrumentals. Tell Me is one of their
slower tracks.Other good songs on this album are
Happy, and It’s your life. Happy
is a perfect example of what Goldfinger does best.
The album has great content in it, and there aren’t
a lot of explicit lyrics either (although, there
are some mainly in FTN). It’s good how this
band writes mainly about positive things instead
of negative things. This cd is a very good cd, and
it would be a great one to have in your cd collection
because it seems to offer motivation, while providing
a good tune to cruise to!
Goo Goo Dolls - Gutterflower

By: Debbie
Rating:

Key Tracks: Big Machine, Here
Is Gone, Truth Is A Whisper
Everybody knows who this band is by now- they have
been around for a good twenty years. With hits such
as Iris, and their
latest single Here Is Gone,
many people still try to persuade others that the
Goo Goo Dolls have not put out a decent album since
their first. I, for one, cannot see anything but improvement
with each record, especially their last, Gutterflower.
Sure, not every track is the greatest, but it is very
rare to find a CD where every track is one-hundred
percent satisfying. Here Is
Gone, and Truth
Is A Whisper are the strongest tracks.
Up Up Up and Smash
are by far the weakest. It may not be all the way
back to their first release for some, but Gutterflower
shows that The Goo Goo Dolls have definitely evolved
and have not forgotten they way.
The Goo Goo Dolls – Dizzy
Up The Girl

By: Dawn
Rating:

Key Tracks: Black Balloon,
Slide, Broadway, Iris
No one knew much about the GGD before this CD. Name
had been a hit, but this release ensured they were
here to stay. Very radio friendly pop/rock hits on
this one. Dizzy Up The Girl
offered up Slide
as it's first single. Including Iris
on the CD made it a definite big seller. January
Friend and Full
Forever were two songs delivered by Robby
(the bassist), in his nasally voice. The writing is
good but I personally do not like his voice. Extra
Pale and All Eyes
On Me were written by Rzeznik and Takac,
who were childhood friends. Broadway
is like listening to a story, and is one of my favorites.
(The dim light hides the years
On all the faded girls Forgotten but not gone You
drink it off your mind You talk about the world Like
it's someplace that you've been). Add
it to your collection but to truly enjoy this the
music, you should see the band live.
Greenwheel - Soma Holiday

Key Tracks: Shelter, Breathe
Coming straight out of St. Charles Missouri, Greenwheel
successfully have molded their debut into something
that will invade the airwaves, single after single.
Think Matchbox Twenty meets Nickleback. Track after
track, Greenwheel provides ear-pleasing catchy lyrics
about everything from life to love. Shelter,
is a carryover from the blockbuster hit Spider-Man.
Tracks such as Radiance and Breathe
show off their softer, sensitive side. Dim Halo
shows off Jordan's, the lead singer's, ability to
turn his vocals into a stronger rock sound that
cannot be compared. Like it or not, the platinum
records are definitely theirs for the taking.

Jennifer Love Hewitt - Barenaked

By: Debbie
Rating:

Key Tracks: Barenaked, Hey
Everybody
With Jennifer’s latest release Barenaked,
she goes back to her roots, back to where
everything started for her. Jennifer was even doing
pop before pop princess Britney Spears, and for the
most part, did it better. Most would recognize her
as the actress in huge motion pictures or your favourite
television show. The title track was surprisingly
quite poor, except for the chorus. Without the chorus
to tie everything together and to turn the bad into
good, this song would have flopped. In You,
Jennifer’s voice doesn’t exactly fit.
However, the lyrics make you fall in love all over
again. Hey Everybody
definitely has Merideth Brook’s (the albums co-writer),
soft rock style shining through and would be an instant
hit if it were to hit stations across the globe. Though
she definitely isn’t Janis Joplin in her attempt to
cover Me and Bobby McGee,
Hewitt handled all the tracks exceptionally well,
and has no doubt gained many spins at radio stations
everywhere, and not just because she’s sexy, but because
she’s got the talent.
Faith Hill - Cry

Rating:

Key Tracks: Cry, When The Lights
Go Down
When Cry was first
released, I was amazed by the musical change, once
again, and not to mention the slutry, but artistic,
video. If You’re Gonna Fly
speaks of the emptiness addiction brings along with
it. The spoken intro of Beautiful
was definitely a mistake. The gospel-drenched One,
and If You're Gonna Fly
(Pink written), are definitely notable tracks. You’re
Still Here reflects losing a loved one,
and along with Stronger,
deserves to be absorbed and savored. Not satisfied
with Faith’s new image or sound? That’s too bad. As
she states on Free,

There's more to one of the newest boy/girl groups
out there, than cute girls and good looking guys.
For being unsigned at the moment, they posess a lot
more talent than a lot of signed bands out there,
and their sound is a lot more unique and origional.
Although "Bounce" doesn't really grasp my attention,
"iC6 tonight," "You are who you are," and "Unforgiven"
easily make up for that. iC6 is an extremely talented
group who are patiently waiting for their turn in
the spotlight, which I guarantee, with all their hard
work, will come way sooner than expected.

Key Tracks: Busted
“You are busted, and you can’t be trusted..baby.”
If you have not heard of I.D. before, I’m surprised!
Their new single, “Busted” has hit all Canadian
radio stations. The song is about a guy who thinks
he’s close with a girl but really she finds out
that she’s been chatting on him. Most people can
really relate with this song because a lot of people
get cheated on by their girlfriends/boyfriends.
If you have never heard of ID, go
here. and buy their single. Their CD should
be out by the last week of May, first week of June.
This CD gets 6 stars out of 5.
IMX- IMX
By: Ally
Rating:

Key Tracks: "Clap Your Hands (Parts I and II),"
"Hate The Playa," "Beautiful (You Are)"
IMx is a great example of today’s R&B: great beats,
catchy hooks, and all the references to "booty shaking"
and "playa hating" one can stomach. They deal with
subjects like the loss of innocence in "First Time,"
but also show they can have a good time with the
first single "Clap Your Hands (Pt. I)" and its counterpart,
"Clap Your Hands (Pt. II)." Each version has its
own distinct feel, which makes for two really different
tracks with the same kind of meaning. "Hate The
Playa" is an uptempo with pretty straightforward,
and at times, trite lyrics, because how many times
can you hear the line "don’t hate the playa/ hate
the game?" Despite the unoriginality of this song’s
lyrical content, it’s still a fun track that deserves
some recognition. The ballads, like on any Immature/IMx
album, are beautifully done. "Beautiful (You Are)"
and "Tears" are the best by far, but "Pillow" is
great too, boasting wonderful lyrics and beautiful
harmonies. Other notable mentions are "First of
All" and "Ashamed."

Key Tracks: "Busted," "Let’s Play"
Identically Different is right. One of Canada's
newest "boy bands" goes against everything that
makes a boy band, other than the good looks part.Compare
them to *Nsync or The Backstreet Boys if you must,
but they wrote most of the tracks on their first
album, which is already a step ahead of both bands
with their first release. Two hits you are probably
all familiar with are "Busted," the track that got
the ball rolling for them and their second release
"Let's Play." Although I.D. are not yet released
in the U.S., I guarantee that once they are, their
fan base is going to explode, all around the world.
"Golddigger" talks about a girl who is just after
money while "Chance with you" is obviously about
wanting a chance. It may seem like the typical boyband
record, yet I.D. really take music to the next level,
which was unexpected by many. The album is mixed
nicely with remixes, ballads and up-beat tunes that
make you want to get on the dance floor. A job very
well done.

Janet Jackson- All For You

By:Ally
Rating:

Key tracks: All for you, Someone to call my lover,
Trust a try
It’s been a few years since the little sister of the
Jackson clan put out an album, and it was worth the
wait. "All For You," Ms. Jackson’s nastiest record
to date, boasts love songs from every aspect of the
spectrum, from break-ups to make ups, from schoolgirl
crushes to bedfellows. The result is a spectacular
album from the wonderful and talented Janet Jackson.
Janet’s music always seems to reflect what’s going
on in her life and as she states in "Come On Get Up,"
an excellent song heavily influenced with African
beats, "now I see/ the single life’s for me." Many
songs, like the irresistible first single "All For
You" and "Someone To Call My Lover" are about wanting
some lovin’. "Trust A Try" starts out sounding like
a musical, and then all of a sudden turns into this
loud track which has a hot guitar riff and a energetic
beat that, along with brilliant lyrics, just may be
my favorite song on the album. Janet definitely shows
a much more, ahem, mature side on some of the steamier
ballads. Warning: these are not for the younger audience!
Don’t let "All For Love" fool you, the album isn’t
all fun, poppy songs with stellar beats but there
is a string of highly sensual slow jams in the middle
of the record with lyrics you probably shouldn’t sing
around your parents. Other great tracks include the
club-ready "You Ain’t Right," "Son Of A Gun (ft. Carly
Simon)," and "Would You Mind." Overall, Janet wows
us yet again with the diverse sounds of "All For You."
Ms. Jackson clearly proves that you don’t have to
be a bouncy blond teen singer to make a splash in
music today.

"Money can't buy you happiness" states Jelleestone
in "Money (part 1)" off his newest release "Jelleestone

that track, I guarantee you'll fall in love with
this album. On "I don't care" you can hear the sound
of a marching troupe over muted horns. On "How U

girlfriend and has added a lot of stress to their
relationship. Whatever you are looking for, Jelleestone
has it to offer you. Don't believe me? Grab yourself

expected. Standing Still, her first single
off this record, sticks to you like glue and doesn’t
release you. It makes you keep wanting more track
after track. Break Me is your typical ballad,
but it doesn’t overdo it. This Way almost
overdoes it, but is still an extraordinary song.
There are two bonus live tracks: Grey Matter
and Sometimes It Be That Way. They are good,
but definitely do not replace how much better it
would be to see her live. Whoever thought Jewel
was gone for good has been proven wrong. Jewel is
back. This time, I hope it’s for good.
Jon B. "Pleasures U Like"
By: Ally
Rating:

Key Tracks: "Don't Talk," "Sof'n Sweet," "Boy Is
Not A Man"
Jon B.'s silky smooth voice and tantalizing lyrics
will definitely give you the "Pleasures U Like"
on his fourth studio release. The first single,
"Don't Talk," is already a club favorite, and that's
no shock. The track possesses the perfect booty
shakin' beat and the I'm-so-fly lyrics that will
have even the shyest wallflowers hitting the floor.
"Sof'n Sweet" is extremely influenced with a heavy-bass
feel and has some pretty steamy lyrics that, paired
with Jon's alluring voice, make for a excellent
song. Now, a Jon B. record would not be complete
without a few sexy slow jams, and "Pleasures" is
no exception. A great song with a great message
to all you "boys" out there is "Boy Is Not A Man,"
which explains the reasons why a woman needs a man
instead of a boy to treat her right. By far the
most romantic of the ballads has to be "Now That
I'm With You." The lyrics are extremely sweet and
the way he sings it makes it feel as if he's singing
those words right to you via your headphones. He
is a supremely talented artist that doesn't get
enough credit for his work, and "Pleasures" is an
outstanding piece of work that should be played
over and over again.
Joe - Better Days

By: Debbie
Rating:

Key Tracks: What If A Woman,
Ghetto Child, Let’s Stay Home Tonight
Joe may not be the “well-known all-star” that many
R&B singers are today, but Better Days proves he makes
up for it, if he’s even really missing out on much
by having the low-profile. Ghetto
Child is excellent, and sends a good message
to kids- keep your head up and do your best. I
Like Sexy Girls is pretty self-explanatory
when seeing the title: Joe expresses his admiration
for women. Lover's Prayer
is about him praying his current relationship will
work out. The guest appearances aren’t for filler
and aren’t distracting from the albums entire concept.
Joe knows how to catch more flies with honey than
with hassles. You will definitely fall in love with
Joe's soulful voice over and over again. Joe Thompson
has hit a milestone in the male R&B genre.
Joee

Key Tracks: Arriba, Angel [Reprise] and I Don’t
Believe You
When I first saw this CD, I wondered who this singer
was. The name sounded familiar, and once I was listening,
I found it hard to believe this was the same singer
that brought us the hit Arriba, and the newer
track I Don’t Believe You. But wait, it doesn’t
stop there. Not only did Joee exceed my expectations,
Joee either wrote or co-wrote nine of the eleven
tracks, co-produced, arranged and played the piano/keyboard
throughout the entire album. Impressed yet? Although
tracks like Sunshine lacked the Hawiian Groove
of the album, but Joee still managed to pull them
off with major success. My favourite tracks on this
album are: the acoustic Angel [Reprise].
I Don’t Believe You, because of the high-energy
impact, and Does That Make You Happy. The
two year wait for this album was well worth it.
Danko Jones – Born A Lion

By: Debbie
Rating:

Key Tracks: Love Is Unkind,
Suicide Woman
Well known Toronto rockers Danko Jones are back, this
time though, with their first major label debut, the
debut everyone have been waiting so long for. Born
A lion contains many fast rants which lash out at
everything imagineable, such as screwed-up girls in
the track Suicide Woman. Lovercall
starts up the adrenalin. Love
Is Unkind is nothing other than a mammoth
like ending. This is rock ‘n’ roll at its most honest,
rawest level. They bring back they essentials of rock:
guitar, drums, bass and songs about beautiful women.
Though some rougher edges have been softened, Danko
Jones is still 100 percent fast and furious. With
this album Danko jones has shown that they are ready
to climb that mountain to the top.

Key Tracks: Three Small Words, You're A Star, Shape
Shifter
Have you seen the movie yet? Starring Rachael Leigh
Cook, Tara Reid, and Rosario Dawson star in this
comic-cartoon remake of a feisty punk-pop grrl band.
The CD is almost like a real band's CD rather than
a soundtrack - one rockin' punky tune after another.
The tunes were written and produced by hit creators
Babyface and his wife, Tracy Edmonds, and weren't
actually sung by the actresses themselves, but by
Kay Hanley (of alternative-rock group Letters to
Cleo). Still, the girls had to learn how to play
their instruments well for the silver screen - they
had to "perform" in front of 10,000 people on their
set. This CD is definetley worth buying, even if
the group isn't real, it still holds a bunch of
awesome body-rockin' songs... and even some good
slow ones.

Alicia Keys - Songs In A Minor

By: Debbie
Rating:

Key Tracks: Why Don’t You Call
Me?, Fallin, A Woman’s Worth
Although Alicia is beautiful, she greatly differs
from a lot of R&B artists out there that continually
“Shake their booty” for the cameras. On Alicia’s debut,
Songs In A Minor,
Alicia plants herself behind a piano and shows off
her sweet, warm vocals. I’ve heard some talk about
people wondering why everyone is so hyped about Alicia.
My answer: Take Jay-Z’s Renegade
as an example. "Do you fools / Listen to music or
/ Do you just skim / Through it?" Although I found
the first track, Piano and
I to be rather boring and pointless, the
rest of the CD is very good quality. Fallin
and “A Woman’s Worth,” otherwise known as her hit
singles, are only a very small taste of what this
CD has to offer, and what Alicia has to offer in the
future. Alicia’s album may not be perfect, but no
album is.

Avril Lavigne - let Go

By: Debbie
Rating:

Key Tracks: Losing Grip, Sk8ter
Boi, Tomorrow
"I’d rather be anything but ordinary," Avril exclaims
on her debut CD. Avril is definitely just that. Having
a successful, multi-genre record under her belt at
age 17 isn’t exactly what I would call common. Her
first single Complicated,
is more on the pop side. In Anything
But Ordinary, Avril sings about living
life it its fullest. Radio-friendly Sk8ter
Boi is definitely a punk-pop blast, and
one of the top tracks on my list of favourites. Unwanted
and Losing Grip
are the “darker” songs on the album, Unwanted
also being more of a rock track. Losing
Grip may not be considered dark in your
books, but it’s darker than the pop Complicated.
Avril is the best artist to have come onto the scene
in a long while. She has an amazing insight into life,
and she keeps herself real. Whether Avril is praised
for being independent, or criticized for being a so-called
“fake independent,” that is dressed as a skater, but
is really another Britney, one thing will always remain
true: her music.
CoCo Lee - “Promise”

By:Kenneth
Rating:
Key Tracks:Dow Man Dan, Easy Come Easy Go
“You ARE the reason I’ve worked so hard to making
this album a GREAT one.” CoCo Lee writes in the
lyrics flap of “Promise,” her latest offering to
be taken seriously as a mature RnB artist which
once again completely fails due to over usage of
using cookie cutters while baking the album. Kicking
off the album with a so-called “hip hop” single
“So Crazy,” one may wonder if they were utterly
listening to a Destiny’s Child-reject song with
a poor rapper, adding salt to the wound (it is clear
Lee has not learnt from using A-Butter’s destructive
rap on her 1999 debut American single “Do You Want
My Love”). The second track “Dow Man Dan” becomes
a saving grace, a mellow and sweet track lightly
dashed with a tangy RnB flavor; although another
artist can sing the song just as delicious, Lee’s
divalicious octaves makes it clear why she landed
a deal with Sony/Epic. From here on off, the album
flows by without any indication one is listening
to anything new, ranging from generic pop (“Let
Go” sounds like cutting room floor scraps from Jessica
Simpson’s single “Irresistible”) to generic ballads
(“Baby, I’m Sorry” appearing in Mandarin AND Cantonese).
“Easy Come Easy Go” is a somewhat funky upbeat song
to dance to, but other than that, ballads such as
“Love So Real,” “Blue Sky,” and “Eternal Promise”
are poised for running on any movie credits. “A
Love Before Time” did run during movie credits;
the less-than-stellar ballad’s lyrics surprisingly
nabbed Oscar nominated theme song to “Crouching
Tiger, Hidden Dragon.“ It is clear that Lee has
a beautiful voice, living up the “Mariah Carey of
the East” label, but aside from her voice, the only
thing that looks to have matured is the stunning
subtle look in Lee’s photographs in the album inlay.
Lifer
By: Debbie
Rating:

Key Tracks: Not Like You, Breathless
Are you sick of listening to the same old bands?
If you love bands such as The Deftones, you'll love
Lifer. Lifer, which is made up of Nick Coyle (vocals),Mark
Klepaski (bass), Aaron Fink (guitarist), and Tony
Kruszka (DJ), Chris Lightcap (drummer), got the
break they needed two years ago when they won MTV's
"Ultimate Cover Band" contest by performing their
rendition Limp Bizkit's "Nookie." Even if you are
not sick of the usual bands you listen to, give
Lifer a try. I guarantee that you will like what
you hear.
Lifehouse- No Name Face

Key tracks: Hanging by a moment,Breathing,Somewhere
In Between
A must have CD. Hanging By A Moment is only a taste
of what this CD has to offer. Pay special attention
to Simon, Breathing (a beautiful love song), Quasimodo
and Somewhere In Between (my personal fave). Jason
Wade is a great song writer with deep lyrics especially
for someone as young as he is. He writes about love,
loss, and personal pain. And he makes you feel it.
His song writing style reminds me of Rob Thomas
from matchbox twenty. This is only the beginning
of a long career for this band.
Limp Bizkit- "Chocolate
Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavoured Water" Rating:

By: Ashlee

Key Tracks: Rollin, My Generation
You can really get ROLLIN’ with this CD! There’s
great songs like “My Generation,” and "Rollin’ "
as well as the well known “Mission Impossible” theme
song. All of the songs on it are really good with
the exception of a few lame songs. This CD has the
songs that really get into your head, and they play
over and over in your mind until you hear the song.
It has a good blend of Rock/Rap and a nice attempt
at trying to be hard-core. I’m sure Jon Davis doesn’t
charge much for lessons.
Linkin Park - Hybrid Theory

By: Kirsty
Rating:

Key Tracks: In The End, Crawling, Points of Authority,
A Place for My Head
If you like Staind, Cold, Limp Bizkit, Tool, or
Deftones, chances are you'd like Linkin Park. Most
of you have probably heard "In the End", "Papercut",
"Crawling", and of course "One Step Closer" on the
radio, but if you haven't heard every song on their
debut album, Hybrid Theory, you haven't really heard
Linkin Park. Whether screaming at the top of their
lungs or singing with those sweet voices, Chester,
Mike, Brad, Joe, and Rob are amazing to listen to.
Whether it's one of their louder song, like "One
Step Closer", "Crawling", and "With You" or a quieter,
calmer one like "In the End", "A Place for My Head",
and "Pushing Me Away", these five talented guys
combine awesome tunes with powerful lyrics, making
great music. If you haven't got "Hybrid Theory"
already, I suggest going out and getting it; if
you have got it, great! And check out their website
at www.linkinpark.com,
for more info on them and their music. Enjoy!
Live - Throwing Copper

By: Dawn
Rating:

Key Tracks: I Alone, Lightning Crashed, Selling
the Drama
Released in 1994, this is my favorite Live cd. Chad
Taylor (guitar), Ed Kowalczyk (vocals), Patrick
Dalheimer (bass guitar) and Chad Gracey (drums and
background vocals) came together in high school.
Ed has a different outlook on life and writing which
is clear in songs such as Lightning Crashes and
Shit Towne. One of my personal favorites is I Alone
with lyrics such as "it's easier not to be wise
and measure these things by your brains". This is
just an all around great cd. Selling the Drama and
All Over You are two more songs included on the
cd. Each song shows a depth and sense of humor that
is priceless.
Live On Release - Seeing
Red
By: Debbie
Rating:

LOR - one of Bif's incredible bands: talent filled,
down to earth and just all around incredible. Coming
out of BC, and still attending highschool, these
girls have far more accomplishments under their
belts than many teenagers their age. These girls
write their own music and play their own instruments-
definitely not your normal girl band. Well known
for their hit "I'm afraid of Britney Spears," their
CD continually proves, track after track, that there's
a lot more where that came from. "Get With It" further
proves the power women have in the music indusrty,
if given the chance. Live On Release won't be going
anywhere anytime soon. Face it, you're either with
them, or are totally music deprived. Which one would
you rather be? Take your pick.
LL Cool J – X

By: Debbie
Rating:

Key Tracks: Love U Better,
Big Mama
LL Cool J still successfully drops sensual hip hop.
Being his 10th release, one would expect he would
have grown old, and to many, dropped off the face
of the earth. However, it’s quite the opposite, actually.
Love U Better and
Paradise are decent
and getting quite a bit of airplay. Big
Mama, which features Dru Hill, and is dedicated
to his grandmother who raised him, will definitely
touch your heart. With joints like Luv
You Better, LL shows why all the ladies
love him and why the fellas either want to be him,
or love to hate him. Shining bright on all tracks,
LL accepts the love from some other old friends as
well, which include: Puff Daddy (After
School) and the freshly pressed and released,
Amerie (Paradise).
Though The Neptunes don’t really work for LL Cool
J’s style, and although X
hasn’t broken any new grounds, LL still knows how
to rock the mic.
Jennifer Lopez- J.Lo

Key tracks: Love don't cost a thing, Play
She has done it again. She has accomplished so many
things in her career so far, it's amazing! With
smash hits "Love don't cost a thing" and "Play,"
its obvious why this girl remains at the top of
the charts- she has got what it takes. If you don't
have this cd in your cd collection, got out and
buy it! It is a must have cd for anyone!
Lisa Lobe- Cake and Pie

By: Dawn
Rating:

Key tracks: You don't know me, We could still belong
together, and Kickstart
The vocals on this cd are great as usual, but there
aren't many songs that stand out. he cd is a little
more rock than in the past, especially "We could
still belong together," (one of my favorites) but
at times it's too slow (drops me down). In "everyday"
loeb sings "love turns its back just to stand in
my way.....everyday." someone you should know reminds
me of her older style ("stay"). My absolute favorite
on cake and pie has to be "You don't know me." It's
catchy and has great lyrics such as "she doesn't
know that we know that we've been here before....she
says 'you don't know me at all'....." Dweezil Zappa
plays a large part in the making of this cd. Zappa
contributes electric guitar, music and lyrics to
"You don't know me." He produced and wrote the music
for "Underdog" and he does the guitar solo for "Drops
me down." She also worked with glen ballard who
helped write the music for "The way it really is."
Overall, I probably won't find myself listening
to this cd very often, but it's a great for those
times you're just sittin' at home relaxing.

John Mann – Acoustic Kitty

By: Debbie
Rating:

Key Tracks: Acoustic Kitty,
Somebody’s Miracle, What Language
John Mann’s Acoustic Kitty
represents an exciting new sound that will definitely
tickle the fancy of music lovers everywhere. Acoustic
Kitty, the CD’s title track, and Somebody’s
Miracle are incredible lyric-driven songs
full of emotion and honesty... but if that kind of
song isn’t your preferred style, Red
Deer? picks up the speed and delivers more
energy. American TV
follows up with the same level of energy, ensuring
that there are a few songs for everyone on the album.
John Mann will never have to release a greatest hits
album - Acoustic Kitty
is already it. It’s rare for a CD to have a solid
lineup of songs ready to be unleashed onto the radio,
but this one goes beyond that. Every song is good
enough to hit the radio and make an impact. It’s a
fairly safe assumption to say that John Mann will
be entering the spotlight very soon, and it looks
like he might be there for awhile.
Matchbox Twenty- Mad Season

Rating:

Key tracks: If You're Gone, Mad Season, Rest Stop,
Leave
Matchbox Twenty, who has been topping the adult
contemporary charts for what seems to be as long
as we can remember has dished us up the key to their
success.
Truth of the heart.
Lead singer, Rob Thomas, penned the album, putting
forward his most intimate experiences, making for
one hell of an album. From tracks like "Mad Season"
and "Angry" that demonstrate intense feelings with
a strong beat to more mellow tracks like "Rest Stop"
and "You Won't Be Mine," this album will prove impressive
for the die hards and new fans alike. Just when
you think that the group can't get better, they
do. They're the kind that only shines with more
experience, and their material never gets old. Straight
from a line in one of their hard hitting ballads,
"Bed of Lies", "I'm marking it down to learnin',
cuz I can..." And they've learned. They've got the
key to our hearts in their hands, and fans everywhere
are anxiously awaiting their next move.
Matchbox Twenty - Yourself
or Someone Like You

By: Dawn
Rating:

Key Tracks: Push, 3am, Long Day
Matchbox 20's best cd! It includes radio hits such
as Real World, Long Day, 3am, Push, and Back to
Good. Yourself or Someone Like You is a timeless
cd, always worth listening to. No matter what you're
going through there's a song on here for you, to
give you hope and help you realize someone else
has experienced the very same thing and survived.
Rob Thomas makes you feel as if you're an old friend
having a conversation. He is a brilliant song writer
and this is a must have cd.
Matchbox Twenty – More
Than You Think You Are

By: Dawn
Rating:

Key Tracks: Disease, Unwell,
Cold, Hand Me Down, You're So Real
This new sound is all over the place, some songs sound
reminiscent of The Beatles, others (Hand
Me Down) play out like a country song.
"We wanted to get back to the sound of records we
grew up with," Thomas says, pointing to vintage Elton
John, Fleetwood Mac and Tom Petty. This is Matchbox's
first cd (although their 3rd release) where it's a
collaboration of all of the band members, drummer
Paul Doucette, guitarists Kyle Cook and Adam Gaynor,
and bassist Brian Yale. There are two songs that Paul,
Kyle and Rob wrote, Feel
and Soul. Cold
and Downfall were
written by Rob and Matt Serletic, their producer.
Could I Be You was
written by the drummer Paul Doucette. The entire cd
is full of hits. Disease
is the first single, written by Rob Thomas and Mick
Jagger and already released to radio. The ballad Bright
Lights features Rob on the piano (like
in 3AM acoustic). Listen for the Gospel Choir at the
end of Downfall.
Unwell is one of
my favorites "I'm not crazy I'm just a little Unwell."
Each song is so unique and different, they cannot
be pinned down to one specific area. A little pop,
throw in some rock, add some soul, spice it up with
a country and occasionally oldies sound and you have
More Than You Think You Are.
Rob Thomas is a timeless song writer, and he's back
to give us more.
Sarah Mclachlan - Mirrorball

By:Dawn
Rating:

Key Tracks: Posession, Path of Thorns, Fear
A cd filled with songs played live at the Lilith
Fair. It's almost a greatest hits cd with songs
such as Building a Mystery, Good Enough, Adia, Posession
and Sweet Surrender. Sarah also includes the always
cute Ice Cream and asks the crowd to sing along.
As someone who attended Lilith Fair, this cd is
a great reminder of how much fun it was. Sarah is
a talented singer and song writer and this cd show
cases her years of work and hit songs.
Holly McNarland - Home
Is Where My Feet Are

By: Debbie
Rating:

It has been five years since Holly released her
last CD, which was titled Sour Pie. Within
those five years, she was able to get married, start
a family, and mature. Home Is Where My Feet Are
is a perfect example of that growth. Listening to
her latest album sends you on an emotional rollercoaster
ride and brings forth emotions many don't even realize
they possess. Hearing Holly reminds me a lot of
the likes of Bif Naked. Do You Get High?
starts out the album on an extremely good note and
is one of the more heavier songs. Beautiful Blue,
the first single, is already leaving its mark on
the music charts, proving McNarland has picked up
right where she left off. Brush Into My Tears
and I cry definitely show the softer side
of her. All in all, Home Is Where My Feet Are
proves Holly has grown and will definitely prosper.
Matthew Good Band- “Beautiful
Midnight”
By: Ashlee

Key Tracks: “Hello Time Bomb,” “Load Me Up,” and
“Strange Days.”
This is a CD worth buying! A lot of songs on it
are hits that have been played on the radio such
as: “Hello Time Bomb,” “Load Me Up,” “Strange Days”
and “The Future is X-Rated,” just to name a few.
It has a good blend of heavy and soft music. I would
say this cd deserves four out of five stars. Some
of the less popular songs on it sort of sound the
same. Overall, it’s a great CD! Even I have it…
John Mayer - Room For
Squares
By: Dawn
Rating:

Key Tracks: No Such Thing, Love Song For No One,
Back To You
Jazzy, unique songs from a man with a great talent
for song writing. I first heard No Such Thing
on a trip back east, and although I didn't know
the artist's name, I was determined to find out.
With words such as "They love to tell you 'stay
inside the lines' but something's better on the
other side. I wanna run through the halls of my
high school, I wanna scream at the top of my lungs,
I just found out there's no such thing as the real
world, just a lie you've got to rise above......"
(from No Such Thing) I was hooked. John Mayer
has a breathy voice similar to Dave Matthews. His
songs show a distinct outlook on life, including
Love Song For No One (I'll know it when I
see you, until then I'll hide in my bedroom, staying
up all night just to write a love song for no one).
One of my favorite songs on the cd, Back To You,
stuck in my head hours after I was done listening.
This is a must have cd filled with songs dealing
with issues every adult has experienced.
John Mayer – Insie Wants

By:
Rating:

Key Tracks: Back to You, Love
Soon, Comfortable
This cd was originally released independently and
once John's first major release went platinum they
decided to re-release it. If you like a more acoustic
sound, it's for you. I prefer
Back To You on this cd as opposed to the
version on Room For Squares.
It's less produced and therefore more real. Victoria,
Comfortable, Quiet and Love
Soon are the 4 songs you don't get on Room
For Squares, and they're worth it. Comfortable
is my favorite song John Mayer has written. It's a
universal song to which we can all relate; when you're
starting a new relationship but you long to be with
the one who you feel "comfortable" with (Our love
was, comfortable and so broken in, she's perfect,
so flawless I'm not impressed, I want you back). Love
Soon is about deciding that your current
relationship will be considered love (soon).
The Moffatts- "Submodalities"
By: Diana
Rating:

Best Tracks- Bang Bang boom, California, Walking
behind and I don't want you to want me
There is no comparison between "The Moffatts" earlier
cds and their newest release "Submodalities." Their
first single "Bang, Bang, Boom" still has a popish
tint to it, but it sure does sound more grown up
and mature than "Chapter 1, a New Beginning."Their
songs sure have catchy lyrics and great sound. Throughout
the entire cd, you can see that these guys really
do have a LOT of talent. The don't just write their
own music..they play their own instruments as well
and they all have awesome singing voices. Scott
is on guitar, Clint on Bass, Dave on keyboards and
Bob on drums. "Submodalities" is a cd that is TOTALLY
worth your money! If you don't buy it, you don't
know what you are missing!
Movie Life - ...Has A
Gambling Problem
By: Debbie
Rating:

Key Tracks: Walking On Glass and If Only
Duct Tape Could Fix Everything
I wish this 5 song EP would have been a full-length
record. But then again, so do most people. Walking
On Glass and If Only Duct Tape Could Fix
Everything are two of The Movielife's best songs
ever. The MovieLife demonstrate where pop-punk music
should be now and aren't going to stop to wait for
the mainstream music to catch up. Hand Grenade
is the EP's weakest song, yet it barely slows down
the rest of the disc's pace and energy. That being
the only bad thing to say really says something
about this EP's quality.
M2M - The Big Room
By: Debbie
Rating:

Key Tracks: Sometimes, Leave me alone
Singing and writing their songs, Marion Raven and
Marit Larsen of M2M take their sound to a more mature
level with “The Big Room,” than they did with “Shades
of Purple.” “Sometimes,” as well as “Leave me alone”
almost sound Fleetwood Mac inspired. “Jennifer”
is about a girl that seems to have it all, when
really when you get down to it, has nothing. Although
“Miss Popular” isn’t as great as the rest of the
album, all the other tracks make up for it and guarantee
success for these ladies in the realm of pop. Half
the album sticks more or less to where they were
before. The other half is something totally different
than I even expected.
Maybe This Christmas- Various Artists

By: Debbie
Rating:

Key Tracks: Barenaked Ladies
with Sarah McLachlan- God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen,
Phantom Planet- Winter Wonderland and Vanessa Carlton-
Greensleeves
Maybe This Christmas is pure entertainment. Song after
song, I found it to be nothing short of a collection
of hits. Phantom Planet gives Winter Wonderland a
bit of a harder beat. Coldplay brighten up Have Yourself
A Merry Little Christmas. Vanessa Carlton’s Greensleeves,
Rom Sexsmith’s Maybe This Christmas and Jimmy Eat
World’s 12/23/95 are all excellent.
Brian McKnight- From There
To Here

By: Debbie
Rating:

Key Tracks: Still In Love,
Back At One, 6-8-12
Definitely one of the better greatest hit albums I’ve
ever heard, though I was disappointed that a couple
new songs were added rather than actual hits. However,
both of those tracks have the potential to be number
one, if released. Love of My Life is definitely one
of the best love songs Brian has to offer. Back At
One and 6-8-12 will never lose their romantic touch.
“From Here To There” gives Brian’s songs a fresh,
new feel after hearing them all within one collection
and has left a lot more to be desired, by many. Brian
Mc Knight’s sound is definitely timeless.
Angie Martinez- Animal
House

By: Debbie
Rating:
Key Tracks: If I Could Go
"If I Could Go," featuring Lil' Mo, is one of the
only radio friendly tracks. Animal House could definitely
have used more tracks like that and “We Can Get It
On,” where Martinez successfully distinguishes herself
from those female hip-hoppers around her. The Skits
are truly horrible. The ‘whining’ in “Never” is more
than annoying. “F***ed Up Situation is lame. Angie
Martinez is a decent rapper, however, I think she’ll
have more success as just a DJ.
Ms.Jade- Girl Interrupted

Key Tracks: Jade’s The Champ,
Ching Ching
Making her debut by first appearing on Tweet’s album,
on the “Oops!” remix, Ms. Jade left a lot to be desired
by many. Can she continue to fill the gaps as she
progresses as a person and artist? I’ll let you decide
for yourself. Her album is about her performance,
not how sexy she can look. “Feel The girl,” “Ching,
Ching (Part Two) and “Jade’s The Champ” make you want
to hit the dance floor. “Count it Off” features Jay-Z.
“Why U Tell Me That” lets Lil’ Mo strut his stuff,
while Missy Eliot joins Jade on “Really Don’t Want
My Love.” Though she has very well known, talented
artists joining her, Ms.Jade’s presence is always
tops. “Intro” and “Interlude”-pointless. However,
not a bad debut.

Nappy Roots - Watermelon, Chicken
and Gritz
By: Debbie
Rating:

Key tracks: Awnaw, Slums and Sholiz
"We just some country boys" announce Nappy Roots on
their first release off of Atlantic Records: Watermelon,
Chicken & Gritz. Their indie album may have been a
hit, but there is next to no consistency throughout
this entire album. Most songs I cannot see as releasable
material. However, there still are some good tracks.
“Slums” is a funky track and takes you into “Po Folks”
with the same groove. “Awnaw” and “Blowin Trees” sound
familiar, but are still satisfying at the same time
while “Sholiz” makes you want to get up and get your
groove on. More consistency would have made this album
better, but it definitely is not a flop. If hip-hop
is your favorite genre, you may see this album in
a different light than me, so give it a try!
New Found Glory

Key Tracks: Dressed To Kill, Better Off Dead
By now, you have probably heard of NFG one way or
another. Who hasn't? If you like Blink 182, Good
Charlotte or Sum 41, I don't see how you could not
love this cd. The guitar is great, the songs are
catchy and different than a lot of punk music that
I have heard. "Dressed To Kill" is one of their
most popular songs. All songs are definately releaseable,
so watch out. New Found Glory won't be disappearing
from the spotlight any time soon. Even if you're
not a punk/pop kind of person, you should definately
pick up a copy of this cd.
New Found Glory - Sticks
and Stones

By: Debbie
Rating:

Key Tracks: My Friends Over You, Its Been A Summer
New Found Glory has found a winning formula and
are going to stick with it. Although many think
this album’s sound varies from their last, I beg
to differ. To me, it sounds extremely similar, just
with a bit of a new twist- not that that’s a bad
thing. Since the release of their last album, NFG
has continued to be one of the most established
pop-punk bands out there. Steering away from the
girl-based tracks, New Found Glory has matured with
the release of Sticks And Stones, as their
lyrical content has undergone many changes. Within
these 12 new tracks are even songs that deal with
the loss of a loved one, moving away, and having
to grow up. New Found Glory once again prevail with
their latest release, and prove that NFG definitely
packs a lot of punch.
Nicklelback- Silver Side
Up
By: Debbie
Rating:

Key Track: How You Remind Me
Nickleback has definitely crossed the boundary into
rock stardom. "Silver side up," their second release,
proves that they are not a carbon copy of all the
other rock bands out there- they're better. Each
song is releasable material and has been perfectly
crafted for airplay. Although some songs may sound
extremely similar to other songs out, such as Kryptonite
from 3 Doors Down, it's an extremely impressive
album.
No Use For A Name - Live
In A Dive

By: Ashlee
Rating:

Key Tracks: Martian, The Redemption Song
Ever wonder what No Use For A Name sounds like live?
Look no further, because this cd is a twenty song
compilation of them live. To no surprise, they sound
just like they do on any other cd! The instrumental
and the vocals have been well coordinated and well
mixed with each other to create their awesome sound.
They are an ingenious band, with a creative new
sound, and it is very artistic how they designed
a little comic book within the cd’s booklet. The
band’s cover of the song originally done by Bob
Marley, Redemption Song was well done, and
it wasn’t disappointing! Overall, the band displays
a very humorous side and has great harmonies! If
you like this CD, you’ll love them in concert! So
don’t forget to check this band out, you won’t be
sorry! The cd is full of raw No Use for a Name energy.
No Use For A Name - Hard
Rock Bottom

By: Debbie
Rating:

Key Tracks: Dumb Reminders, Let Me Down
No Use For A Name has been doing punk since way
before the likes of Blink 182 and Sum 41 were even
out of elementary school. Although Hard Rock
Bottom is slightly similar to one of their last
albums, More Betterness, Hard Rock Bottom
is still drooling with with creativity and originality.
Dumb Reminders has already crashed onto mainstream
radio. Let Me Down was totally re-vamped
and sounds ten times better than it did before.
If you're a Green Day fan, you'll love the track
Friends of the Enemy. No Use For A Name's
newest, Hard Rock Bottom, may not be their
best yet, but it sure is fresh.
*Nsync- Celebrity
By: Debbie
Rating:

Key tracks: Pop, Gone, Celebrity
*Nsync- have they done it again? With their latest
release, Celebrity, *Nsync prove that they are not
just another boy band, as well as proving they’ll
be around for a long time yet. Their first single
off Celebrity, “Pop,” proves that they have what
it takes to remain number one. All songs are better
than what they have put out in the past and are
more mature. Songs such as "Up Against the Wall"
and "Girlfriend" make you want to get up and dance.
They also have some nice ballads, like "Gone." One
song, “Girlfriend” asks, “Will you be my girlfriend?”
There is definitely something for everyone on this
CD. One minute, you’ll be up dancing and the next
thing you know, you’ll be sitting there daydreaming
about what they are singing about. “Celebrity” is
totally worth your money.
*NSYNC - Pop

Key tracks: Pop
"I know you like this dirty pop..."
The guys of *NSYNC are back and better than ever
with the first single off their soon to be released
album, 'Celebrity.' The new album, set to hit stores
on July 24th, brings forward a new sound, taking
pop to the next level featuring tracks produced
by well known artists all over the industry.
"Pop," to the co-writer and one of the leads, Justin
Timberlake, along with the other members, JC Chasez,
Joey Fatone, Lance Bass, and Chris Kirkpatrick hope
that this song will serve as an anthem. They claim
that all types of music center from the same pop
inspired place, and it can be far more creative
than how some imagine it. "It's just about respect..."
They've called on electronica artist and producer,
BT (www.btmusic.com), to bring a harder edge to
their first single, giving you something that you
can't help but get up and dance to. They might've
just teamed up with an ace that will give them the
winning combination to success...yet again. The
single has just hit #29 on Billboard's Hot 100 after
only a week of airplay. Not bad for these pop veterans,
huh?
*NSYNC is currently touring the United States giving
previews of this fresh sound to their audiences
on their Pop Odyssey Tour. Tickets for selected
shows are still available for what has already been
called the biggest stage production show of the
year. Visit www.nsync.com

No Doubt- Rock Steady

By: Veronica
Rating:

Key tracks: "Hey Baby", "Hella Good", "Start The
Fire"
This No Doubt CD has totally different vibes from
their previous releases, No Doubt, Tragic Kingdom,
and Return To Saturn. It's a lot more fun and it
still maintains that energetic beat that their music
has always possessed throughout their whole career.
It mainly focuses on the postive side of things
as where Return Of Saturn and Tragic Kingdom had
several depressing, wallowing-in-my-self-pity type
of songs. Of course the beautiful Gwen Stefani is
still showing off her unique voice on this. I think
that anybody would be able to enjoy this record
because it has a pretty wide range of styles. Anyone
from a rocker to a popper could enjoy these I-want-to-dance-along-to
tracks. I recommend it to everybody!
NOFX - 45 or 46 Songs That
Weren't Good Enough To Go On Our Other Records

By: Ashlee
Rating:

As the title suggests, these songs were apparently
not good enough in the bands mind to go on their
other albums so they made this one. You have to
be a huge NOFX fan to appreciate this album. If
you haven’t experienced NOFX, I wouldn’t suggest
starting here as your first taste of them because
it may leave a bad taste in your mouth for a first
impression. There are about 46 songs on this album
and I’m sure you will find something that tickles
your fancy! A lot of the songs are pretty funny
on this album as well. Bath of Least, Pump
up the Valium, and Party Enema seem to
be a lot of peoples favorites. A good thing about
these cool tunes is that they still follow the same
sound as much of the previous NOFX songs on their
other albums. This cd is a nice compilation of a
variety of different stuff, and although it's definitely
not up to NOFX standards, it is still worth the
listen!

Paul Oakenfold - Bunkka

By: Chris Micheals
Rating:

Key Tracks: Ready Set Go
Good old Oakenfold has done it again folks. Paul Oakenfold’s
newest album and first artist album Bunkka
is a winner in more ways than one. The world renowned
DJ has flexed his spinning fingers in this album by
spanning every type of techno from down tempo to hip-hop.
Almost anyone can enjoy a CD this diverse; whether
you’re partying or just chillin’, it’s the one for
you. Oakenfold mixes styles so well, that first song
on the album Ready steady go,
is flying onto even the alternative airwaves. The
album also sports vocals from famous artists such
as Ice cube, Tricky, Nelly Furtado, Perry Ferrall
and many more. I love a lot of tracks on this album
so I’m not going to name favourites, but all I can
say is check it out.
One Ton – Abnormal Pleasures

By: Debbie
Rating:

Key Tracks: Supersexworld,
Another Miracle
Although the CD has 14 tracks, the number of “hit
material” songs is considerably lower. While Supersexworld
has become a hit, it will probably be the only one
we see from Abnormal Pleasures.
Another Miracle
has a chance of hitting the radio, but it’s doubtful
that it will compete with the popularity of Supersexworld.
One of the songs on the CD, My
Heart Belongs to Daddy, almost had a chance
– until the talking came in. After that, it just became
downright annoying. As it stands now, One Ton is definitely
a one-hit wonder, but they’ve shown that they can
do it once so hopefully we’ll see another big hit
on their next album. However, with the use of Spanish
guitars and themes, One Ton may just hit it big within
the Spanish communities.
Maren Ord - Waiting

By: Debbie
Rating:

Key Tracks: Harsh Words, All
I Want, Beautiful
Maren Ord doesn’t just live her dream every day, she
sings like a dream as well. She has a strong voice,
which is obvious in all tracks, especially in ones
such as All I want, Harsh Words
and Perfect. All
tracks are balanced with that amazing voice that kept
me hypnotized. Her lyrics are uplifting, a change
from today’s polluted, repetitive music scene. In
Sarah, the chorus
is catchy and contagious. I must admit, when I popped
Waiting in for a
listen, I didn’t expect much. However, Maren Ord has
proven without a doubt that she’s amazing. While she
hasn’t hit it big yet, with just a little improvement
and a few more solid releases and she’ll be ready
to take a place amongst the big names. Once again,
Canadian talent impresses.
Otown-"Otown"
By: Monica
Rating:

Key Tracks:"Girl", "All Or Nothing," "Baby I would"
and "Take Me Under"
Everything has a certain order to go in. In show
business for example, first you get an gent or manager,
then you get advertised, and if you're good, you
get money and become famous. It seems like a lot
of work, and it is. For the new boyband , OTOWN,
for example. They were on national television showing
how much work they had to do to become as big as
they are today. Otown's new Cd hit the store shelves
on January 23rd, and has been doing very good, with
it's first single, "Liquid Dreams", in the Hot 100
chart for weeks now. The plan is for the next single
to be "Take me Under". The Cd is your basic boyband
tunes, nothing too special, but it doesn't suck.
The song "Girl" has a jamming beat and cute lyrics.
Ballads "Baby I would" and "All Or Nothing" are
sweet, and sentimental, everything you would expect
it to be. Your dance songs would include "Take me
Under", "Every Six Seconds", and "Sexiest Woman
Alive". All in all, it's a good album, go out and
buy it!
Our Lady Peace- "Spiritual
Machines"
By: Ashlee
Rating:

Key Tracks: In Repair, Life
Spiritual Machines is the latest CD release from
Our Lady Peace. It is packed with a lot of good
songs like “In Repair” and “Life.” It’s got a fresh
new sound blended with many interludes. The music
is so good that you just can’t help but sing along.
On the last track of the CD, if you keep waiting
after the song, there is a little clip at the end
that is interesting to hear. I would give this CD
five stars out of five because it is very unique.
Our Lady Peace - Gravity

By: Debbie
Rating:

Now, with the release of Our Lady Peace’s latest
album Gravity, fans can feast on this high-quality,
heavier rock Our Lady Peace has successfully brought
to the table. The opener All For You proves
the sound change and is probably one of the heaviest
songs they have recorded to date; not to mention
my favourite track on the record. Everything from
the title to the album art suggests that Our Lady
Peace is coming back to reality-back down to earth.
Somewhere Out There and Do You Like It explore soft/heavy
melodies and uplifting lyrics. It has been a long
time since I have been able to put a CD on and be
100% satisfied with every track over and over. Gravity
will definitely get them the break in the US they
have been waiting for. If not, the US definitely
does not know what they are missing.
O-Town- 02

Key Tracks: These Are The Days,
From The Damage, I Showed Her
Finally after release date pushback, after release
date pushback, O-Town released their sophomore relase,
cleverly titled 02. The growth is evident from their
debut album, for they went from sounds of pop to a
style of rock and R&B. The lyrics are nicely written,
and unlike the debut album, most songs are written
or co-written by members of O-Town themselves. O2
features a fun variety of songs from dance and uptempo
songs like I Only Dance With You, Make Her Say Uh,
and Girl Like That, to beautiful ballods such as I
Showed Her, and Can't Lose Me. Although the album
is not a hit on charts, it's definitely worth checking
out.

Papa Roach - lovehatetragedy

By: Debbie
Rating:

I was beginning to wonder what happened to Papa Roach
after their huge debut with Infest.
Although they weren’t out of the limelight for long,
I began to wonder what they would pull out of their
sleeves next. I was truly amazed at the difference
in sound from their last album. The tracks Time
and Time Again, and Born
with Nothing, Die with Everything, have
clever choruses, which would fit with ease on mainstream
radio. Dark themes make up most of this album: depression,
hate and tragedy. However, it's more creative than
Infest. It may be
more mainstream,” and “depressive,” but it’s definitely
good quality.
Joey Pearson – Something
To Say

By: Debbie
Rating:

Key Tracks: Candle Light The
Way, You’re Worth The Time
Recently, there has been a jump in the number of young
artists. Avril Lavigne is the most recent, but the
list is fairly extensive. Most of us think that it
is amazing for a 17 year old to hit it big in the
music industry… but now there is competition from
a singer who isn’t even in highschool. In fact, his
age isn’t even two digits yet. He’s 9 years old. And
he sounds good. Listening to Something
To Say reminds me of The Moffatts when
they were younger, only with more R&B undertones.
While it’s sometimes hard to take the love songs on
the CD seriously, due to Joey’s age, most of them
do seem to relate to ‘puppy love’ and come off as
cute. Candle Light The Way
is the best song on the album, and really shows off
his singing talent. You’re
Worth The Time is also a heavy-hitting
track – it really shows that age doesn’t have to be
a barrier to launching a music career. One thing is
for sure: if he’s this good at age 9, when he gets
older and matures musically, he will only get better.
Pink - Missundaztood

By: Debbie
Rating:

Key Tracks: Don’t Let Me Get
Me, Just Like A Pill
Missundaztood takes
a total leap in the opposite direction of Pink’s debut
Can’t Take Me Home.
The sound: more mature and rockish. Your
Pain Is Painful and Family
Portrait prove nobody is putting words
in her mouth- she’s singing about real feelings and
thoughts. Though Get The Party
Started is your typical pop song, Don’t
Let Me Get Me and Just
Like A Pill are heavier and once again
speak of personal thoughts, feelings and battles;
things teenagers around the globe go through daily.
Misery, who stars
Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler is one of the best tracks
and is single material, though it’s more blues orientated.
Pink is definitely more than just a one-shot flash
in the pan. She’s tired of being compared to pop-princess
Britney and has proven she doesn’t have to change
herself for others, to be who she wants to be. Pink
is making her own waves.
P.O.D - Satellite
By: Debbie
Rating:

I won't deny that P.O.D's sound sure does sound
familiar, just like all the other zillion bands
out there from the same over loaded genre. However,
they arer, by far, one of the best. Many tracks
prove that you can be mad, but still not hate everything
around you. "Alive," their hit single, proves it
and does a darn good job of it. "Youth Of A Nation"
brings the volume down a bit and proves that Satelitte
provides you with a great mix you will want to listen
to over and over. Although P.O.D. is another band
in this over loaded genre, they prove they have
what it takes to remain one of the best and over
come any obstacles that stand in their way of producing
music which may be similar, but is still a extremely
unique experience for the listener.
Porcupine Tree - In Absentia

By: Debbie
Rating:

Key Tracks: Wedding Nails,
Collapse The Light Into The Earth
All the songs In Absentia
are beautiful sound scapes that are catchy, intelligent,
complicated and layered. In The
Sound of Muzak, today’s current music scene
is addressed. Wedding Nails
is almost completely instrumental. Lips
of Ashes and Prodigal
will please long-time fans. The closing number Collapse
The Light Into The Earth, is amazing. After
a quarter-century of punk, it’s always nice to come
across musicians who recall past musical indulgences
and at the same time get total delight out of it.
Though a bit heavier than their previous works, Porcupine
Tree has made a rather successful debut on a major
label. Porcupine Tree are easy to get into, but not
easy to let go.
Puddle Of Mudd - Come Clean
By: Alicia
Rating:

Key Tracks: "Blurry" and "Control"
Many tracks on this album talk about relationships
gone bad, such as the ever-popular songs "Control"
and "Blurry". "She Hates Me" takes a twist on the
album, which makes the song sound more humourous
then angry, though using the f word countless times
in the chorus. "Drift & Die" was a guitar driven
song, as was "Nobody Told Me", which the first minute
or so was soley just guitar. "Bring Me Down" and
"Never Change" are songs which the lead singer talks
about the times he's been let down, and people always
"push him to the curb". "Said" and "Piss it all
away" are slower songs on the album, and though
aren't as good as the guitar driven tracks-they
do have their purpose. This album, overall, has
great beats and powering lyrics. Even though letting
Durst produce 3 songs, this album still shows strength
of their own.
Plus One- Christmas

By: Debbie
Rating:

Key Tracks: What Child is This?,
This is Christmas
Plus One’s Christmas album is definitely the best
thing since sliced bread. Not only does it reflect
on the actual reason for Christmas, rather than all
love songs, it displays sincere talent. However, I
must admit, they do slightly sound like N sync. The
standard carols "Oh Holy Night," and "Silent Night"
aren't nearly as much fun as other tracks, but tracks
such as “What Child Is This?” and “This Is Christmas”
are by far the masterpieces, and proof, that there’s
more to these boys than fame and pretty faces. It’ll
be hard getting “I won’t forget this Christmas” out
of your head and “Christmas” out of your stereo. Let
go of that anti-pop mind frame and you’ll happily
enjoy “Christmas.”
Project 86- Truthless Heroes

By: Debbie
Rating:

Key Tracks: Little Green Men,
Hollow Again
With Truthless heroes, Project 86 take you for a ride
through life. Starting with childhood, to death and
afterlife. "Hollow Again" and "Little Green Men" are
no doubt radio friendly. This album is gritty and
opinionated. Though a little hard to handle the first
few spins, it becomes one of the better records released
lately. Overall, the songs are good. The lyrics are
still great, and even though there is less screaming
on this CD, the vocals are still exceptional. Project
86 have made a brilliant leap forward.

Reel Big Fish - Cheer Up

By: Debbie
Rating:

Key Tracks: What Are Friends
For, Sayonara Senorita
It has been four years since Reel Big Fish’s last
full-length release. Their style has changed, is more
popish than Ska, and they lyrics are more boring than
funny. However, Cheer Up!
does have many styles, like the laid back vibe which
is in What Are Friends For,
or the party style that can be felt in Sayonara
Senorita. Although I found more songs that
were just ok than great, Reel Big Fish prove that
you don’t always have to swear to sell CDs. Rock/pop
fans may appreciate this album, but for you Ska lovers,
you will be disappointed. However, if keeping an open
mind, you will see a band who has only evolved dramatically,
changing into something brand new, while still remaining
fairly fresh.
Remy Shand - The Way I
Feel
By: Debbie
Rating:

The term Fresh is used way too much to describe
new music today. Almost every new CD is termed as
“fresh,” when really, it’s just mainstream music
all over again. However, when “fresh” is used to
describe Remy Shand, it’s the truth. Working on
it over 4 years in his parents condo, he wrote,
arranged, recorded and producing all tracks by himself.
The single “Take a Message,” is an excellent intro
to Shand's style. This album takes us into 21st
century and gives us a new style with singers who
are not African-American that can sing with soul.
The crossover revolution has begun and Remy is leading
the way! The catchy choruses and melodies, keeps
you coming back for more. “The Way I feel” will
not get old, it just keeps getting better every
time you listen.
Rescue - Volume Plus Volume

By: Debbie
Rating:

Key Tracks: Like Deja Vu Like Deja Vu, Like Spaceships
Certain bands seem to appear out of almost nowhere,
even though they have been around for longer than
expected. Out of those bands, very few posess the
ability to change the views of the independant music
scene. Rescue, as a matter of fact, have done just
that. They have proven yet again that the independant
scene can be just as good, and sometimes even put
out better quality music than that which are signed
to major labels. Though the record does have its
weak songs, like (in my opinion) F*ck Pecking
Order and Word From The Man, there is
definitely more good than bad. In the world of punk,
Rescue have marked their spot and will continue
to reign for a long while to come.
Bob Rivers – White Trash
Christmas

By: Debbie
Rating:

Key Tracks: Osama Got Run
Over By A Reindeer, What if Eminem Did Jingle Bells
Bob Rivers is definitely one of America’s funniest
song parodists. While he is still no match for Weird
Al, Rivers has a few tracks that place him above the
rest of the parody crowd. Osama
Got Run Over By A Reindeer was the holiday
song of choice in 2001, receiving heavy play with
many radio stations. No need to explain why it became
so popular – it’s probably the funniest track on the
CD too. On the other end of the scale, Aquaclaus
was the least funny of all tracks, and rather pointless.
What If Eminem Did Jingle Bells
is sure to be a hit with how controversial Eminem
is in today’s society. Have
Yourself an Ozzy Little Christmas is cute,
but doesn’t reflect the Ozzy style enough to make
it a truly worthwhile track. Be
Claus I Got High is a parody of Afroman’s
hit, but is even worse than the original. It ranks
just above Aquaclaus.
Overall the songs are decent, but nothing special
with only one or two exceptions. This isn’t the best
parody CD of the season, there has been much better,
but at the same time I’ve heard much worse.
Kelly Rowland – Simply
Deep

By: Debbie
Rating:

Key Tracks: Stole, Dilemma
(feat. Nelly)
Whoever said Kelly can’t make it on her own without
the other Destiny’s Child ladies obviously can’t recognize
a storm coming when they see one. Someone taking the
world by storm, that is. The entire album is as solid
as gold. In addition her first two singles, Dilemma
and Stole, have
done exceptionally well on the radio stations. Within
Past 12, the beat
is hot, her voice is hot. It’s a total party song.
Stole carries an
important message many artists won’t release as a
single. Beyond Imagination
has a slow start, but becomes a total rock ballad,
with the addition of the guitar riffs. Simply
Deep, written by Solange, is extremely
catchy and showcases both her writing ability, and
the vocal ability of both singers. Love/Hate,
written by Brandy and her husband, is totally upbeat
and flows well with the rest of the album. Kelly was
given the chance to strut her stuff and has done it
well. It will not be surprising for her to receive
as much recognition as Destiny’s Child did in her
solo career.
Paulina Rubio - Border
Girl

By: Debbie
Rating:

Think Shakira - extremely pretty and Spanish. Border
Girl starts out strong with a total get up and
dance track, her single Don’t Say Goodbye.
The “move your body” beat doesn’t stop there. Casanova
continues with the same vibe, and it stays almost
throughout the entire CD. Border Girl slows
down the pace a bit, but not for long. The tracks
progressively speed up. Undeniable wasn’t
too appealing, but it’s not totally horrible. Although
5 tracks are in Spanish, one being Si Tu Te Vas
(Don’t Say Goodbye), and only Spanish fluent
individuals would understand, it makes this CD even
more interesting - can you sing in Spanish?

Raphael Saadiq – Instant Vintage

By: Debbie
Rating:

">
Key Tracks: You're The One
That I Like, Uptown
When I heard all the hype over Raphael’s first solo
album, I didn’t believe any of it. I figured he’d
just be another classic “totally amazing, yet gets
stale by the end of the month”, like so many singers
out there today. I was wrong. And now, I understand
why there are nineteen tracks: none are trash. All
songs were written entirely by Saadiq himself. You're
the One That I Like shows off the gospel
in gospeldelic, while Uptown
is mainly about his love for his hometown. No matter
what situation is being referred to, Saadiq has it
all, and more. When Justin Timberlake commented on
Raphael’s CD, he couldn’t have put it better: “Raphael’s
got so much vibe! That explains why there are so many
tracks on the record. Great listen, great string arrangements,
LOVE IT!” His music has always been more than skin-deep
and Instant Vintage
makes that fact as clear as glass.

By: Veronica
Rating:

Key Tracks:"Respect Me", "I Really Don't Think So"
This CD is very popish. In a way it lacks depth.
It doesn't speak to the audience/listeners; It doesn't
really show true emotions and it doesn't come deep
down from the heart. That's mostly because they
don't write their own songs. (One exception being
"Respect Me", co-written by Donavan Greene, a member
of the group.) However, it is very fun to sing along
to and to get your booty shaking. Two tracks, "He
Said, She Said" and "What She Got", are Co-written
by JC Chasez which could attract some *N SYNC fans
*hint hint*. Could this possibly mean some collaboration?
We'll all just have to wait, and see the outcome
in the future.
Duncan Sheik

By: Dawn
Rating:

Key Tracks: Serena, Out of Order, The End of
the Outside and Home
This was Duncan's first major release and included
the hit song Barely Breathing. She Runs Away was
also released to radio but never did well. This
cd is full of deep lyrics about finding yourself
in songs such as Reasons for Living and Out of Order.
One of my favorite songs is Serena, a song about
a girl trying to break out of her labels. Duncan
has a beautiful voice and many of the songs (In
the Absence of the Sun, Days Go By, November, The
End of the Outside) have an orchestra in the background.
Little known fact: Duncan Sheik and Lisa Loeb went
to college together and she is mentioned in the
liner notes of the cd.
Duncan Shiek - Daylight

By: Debbie
Rating:

Key Tracks: Half Life, Start
Again
Duncan Sheik is back, once again, after his debut
in 1996.Back with a more distinct sound, Daylight
is full of newfound pop and distortion. His brutal
honesty combined with his lyrical depth make this
album another milestone in Duncan's career. Though
some voice distortions sounded more awkward than anything,
Daylight is definitely
Duncan's best work to date. I guarantee you'll keep
feeling definitely addicted to his music. He may be
more mainstream now, but he is more romantically optimistic,
which is a step up. Half Life,
one of the CD’s top tracks, hooks you
from the beginning. Such Reveries
is one of the crappier tracks, but doesn’t affect
the rest of the record to a huge extent. On
Her Mind, shows off Sheiks desire to breathe
new life into his folk-rock roots. For
You and On A High
are extremely heartfelt and show one the kind of talent
Sheik has to pen something as good as that. Definitely
one of the better come-back albums of the year.
Silverchair - Diorama

By: Debbie
Rating:

Key Tracks: Across The Night,
Without You
It has been three years since the release of Silverchair’s
last album. The three year wait was definitely worth
it. Searing guitar riffs and quiet to loud dynamics
on tracks like One Way Mule
and The Greatest View
show Daniel Johns still possesses his Nirvava-based
grunge. However, Across the
Night, the first track, is very orchestra
based, is a nice change of pace, and is a great demonstration
of where Daniel is at in his life right now. It paints
with all colours; hence the cover. Without
You shows a determined, gripping delicacy
that has not been seen since the last Radiohead album.
Silverchair have taken another huge leap forward.
Don’t buy this album thinking it will be like their
last. If you do, you may be disappointed.
Simple Plan - No Pads,
No Helmets, Just Balls

By: Debbie
Rating:

Key Tracks: I’m Just A Kid,
When I’m With You, My Alien
Simple Plan definitely reminds me of Blink 182, or
even the likes of New Found Glory and Sum 41, at times.
More popish than punk, though definitely not a boy
band, many girls would be totally gaga over these
5 cuties. No Pads, No Helmets..Just
Balls definitely starts on the right note
with I’d Do Anything,
and gets you hyped-till the last word and guitar riff.
I’m Just A Kid,
is all over the airwaves and is one of my favourite
tracks. When I’m With You
may be the typical “I want you bad!” pop/punk “love
song,” but definitely has a catchy hook that is as
sweet as candy. Meet You There
– a ballad, but doesn’t slow down the album’s pace
for long. Whether you’re into punk, or only pop, there’s
something on this album for everyone. Definitely not
a bad album for their first time around!
Jessica Simpson- Irresistible

By: Debbie
Rating:

Key tracks: Irresistible, Hot like fire
Jessica Simpson’s sophomore album is truly “Irresistible.”
You have probably heard her latest single “irresistible”
that is all over the radio. Jessica proves she has
expanded her talent by bringing some R&B tunes as
well as the usual catchy pop to her latest release.
She shows incredible taste through the entire album
and certainly does not step over the line of trashy
and acceptable. While most of the album is more
up beat, long-time fans will be extremely pleased
with the ballads “There you were,” which is a duet
with Marc Anthony and “To fall in love again” which
was written by none other than Nick Lachey. If you
enjoy listening to an artist who truly sticks to
her values and displays tremendous talent, Irresistible
is a must have album.
Something Corporate -Leaving
Through The Window

By: Debbie
Rating:

Key Tracks: If You See Jordan,
Hurricane
Something Corporate shows an amazing ability when
it comes to balancing the piano with the guitars.
Although their name is rather ironic when referenced
to the type of music they play (radio rock), they
are constantly set apart from all other “radio rock”
bands. How? Andrew’s Piano. Some tracks are more piano
influenced than others, but it gives their music a
different twist when compared to any other band. If
You See Jordan discusses a high school
bully that, no matter how hard he tries, cannot come
to the realization that he is no longer in high school.
Cavanaugh Park and
Globes and Maps
slow down the record, and are the main piano songs.
Hurricane and Punk
Rock Princess are more upbeat and show
what Something Corporate are really capable of. You
won’t be disappointed.
Sparta – Wiretap Scars

By: Debbie
Rating:

Key Tracks: Cut Your Ribbon,
Cataract, Light Burns Clear
When At The Drive-In abruptly called it quits, guitarist
Jim Ward, bassist Paul Hinojos, and drummer Tony Hajjar
stayed together, and are now known as Sparta. If you
like melodic screaming, this CD may interest you.
For some, it may be too much, but the hardness of
the melodies make it an enjoyable listen. Cut
Your Ribbon, the opening, sets the tone
for the entire CD: a drum break, a moment of silence,
then boom! Jim’s voice. Cataract
is ‘raw punk.’ Air, RX Coup
and Light Burns Clear
all clearly possess a ton of emotional power. For
a ‘garage band’, Sparta certainly packs a lot of punch.
Smoother- Chasing The
Dragon
By: Debbie
Rating:

Key Tracks: East Side
By now, you've probably heard "East Side" all over
the radio and have seen it rapidly climbing the
Much Music Countdown. If you love "East Side," you'll
love Smoothers latest CD release "Chasing The Dragon."
Most songs are up-beat and easy to dance to. Each
song has a completely different vibe to it than
the last. If you have not yet bought this CD, or
have not yet had the chance to experience Smoother
period, it is totally worth your money.Check it
out! It's your loss if you don't.
Snapdragon- The Family
Jewels
By: Dawn
Rating:

Key Tracks: Lucky Day, Laughing on the Inside and
Heaven or Hollywood
The Family Jewels is a debut album from the band
Snapdragon which consists of Summer Rose (vocals),
Rick Jude (keyboards), Dave Salinas (drums) and
Peter Thorn (guitar). Coincidentally, Peter Thorn
tours with Evan and Jaron and I had the opportunity
to meet him recently. He suggested I purchase the
CD and I did. Summer's vocals are very distinct
and coupled with her song writing skills, this is
a unique sounding CD. The background music is great,
filled with awesome guitar riffs. And Summer wrote
with others including Natalie Imbruglia (Sometimes
I) and Nick Trevisick. Summer has a realness about
her which come across in lyrics such as "sometimes
it's hard to fit with sharks and hypocrites (excerpt
from Heaven or Hollywood). With all the fluff that
comes out on the radio, this CD is a nice change
of pace.
Staind - Break the Cycle

By: Kirsty
Rating:

Key tracks: Open Your Eyes, Fade, It's Been Awhile,
Outside, Waste
"If you want to call our music dark, that's fine.
I'm calling it reality based. I'm not making anything
darker than it is already," says Aaron Lewis of
Staind in the July 19th, 2001 issue of Rolling Stone
magazine. "Break the Cycle" has been very successful,
and with very good reason. Every song on this album,
whether a desperate, brutally honest ballad, or
an angry, trashing rant, is something of meaning,
a powerful message. One of these such messages,
in "Open Your Eyes", points out that society ignores
what it doesn't want to admit is there, that we
aren't grateful for what we have, that we do nothing
about the problems in this world, we simply "turn
away". Lewis' lyrics are ones which stick themselves
in your mind, and become part of your everyday thoughts.
He writes of life, loss, and disturbing truths;
he writes of ignorance, pain, and suicide; he writes
of loneliness, and it makes for great listening
that most people can relaate to in some way. And,
bonus!, as well as the studio recorded version of
"It's Been Awhile", there is also a special live
version included at the end of the disc. This is
an album worth every penny, and more. These are
55 minutes and 24 seconds everyone should definitely
hear.
Andy Stochansky - Five
Star Motel

By: Debbie
Rating:

Key Tracks: Stutter, One Day,
Everest
As a fresh face in the music industry to most, the
fact that this is Andy’s third solo release is a shock
to many. His acoustic guitar fuels his lyrics which
is more than enough to bring one into a hypnotic state.
Though the subject, like most artists, is geared towards
love, with Andy, it’s not in the traditional romantic
sense. One Day speaks
of fatalism. Miss USA
talks about troubles a father has to come to terms
with his daughter, who is gay. The poetic Everest
is one of the top tracks. Wonderful,
his first single, is surprisingly the
weakest. Now fueled by more of a straightforward guitar-pop
sound, Andy Stochansky has something to prove: he’s
here, for good.
Sum 41- All Killer No Filler

By: Jenn
Rating:

Key tracks: Fat Lip, In Too Deep
Do you like Blink-182? NOFX or MXPX? Sum 41 is the
name on the street and they are making themselves
known. If you are a fan of any of the above, then
Sum 41's latest, "All Killer No Filler" is an utter
must for your CD collection. Their latest single,
"Fat Lip" has been a TRL top three staple for four
weeks now. It has even managed to kick the Backstreet
Boys and *NSYNC out of the number the number one
position for a change, and take over the countdown.
I do not own the CD as of yet, but I will soon.
I have listened to a few tracks by downloading them
and they are pretty tight. "Fat Lip" and "In Too
Deep" show the guys know how to mix some hip-hop
in with the classic pop-punk style, while "Handle
This" and (once again) "In Too Deep" are not their
best work, Sum shows they can still get the teenyboppers
screaming for more. For more on Sum 41, visit their
website, sum41.com, which uses an asteroid theme
and is an excellent source of Sum 41 info.
Swollen Members – Monsters
In The Closet

By: Debbie
Rating:

Key Tracks: Breath, Fuel Injected
This may look like the third album from Swollen Members,
but looks can sometimes be deceiving. For the most
part, Monsters in the closet is full of remixes and
b-sides, songs that weren’t good enough to make the
cut for previous records. However, the new tracks,
such as Breath (featuring
Nelly Furtado), Battle Axe
Exclusive and the groove of the Fuel
Injected remix are completely fresh and
satisfying. Swollen Members may still sound like their
influences, rather than having their own personal
sound, but if the new tracks are any indication of
what is to come, Swollen Member fans will be more
than satisfied.

Tabitha's Secret - Don't Play
With Matches

By: Dawn
Rating:

Key Tracks: Paint Me Blue,
Unkind, Forever December Version 1 and 2
Released in 1997, Tabitha's Secret had some of the
members who are now in Matchbox Twenty (including
Rob Thomas, Bryan Yale, and Paul Doucette). Tabitha's
Secret is no more but their music lives on. This cd
includes two older versions of 3am (the Matchbox Twenty
hit song). If you're a Matchbox fan and like Rob Thomas'
style of writing, this is a must have cd. These lyrics
are much more raw than anything I've heard from him.
Look for songs such as Tired, Forever December, Here
Comes Horses, and Dear Joan. To find out more (and
to order the cd) visit
Taproot - Welcome

By: Debbie
Rating:

Key Tracks: Art, Everything
Taproot takes heavy music to another dimension that
has never been explored with their second release
Welcome. Myself
is three minutes of riffage with a chorus that refuses
to let go. Art buries
it’s destruction vibe in violin and harmonies and
reminds one of Staind. In Myself,
Taproot proves they still know how to kick out the
jams. Mine on the
other hand sounds overproduced. There is something
called too much of a good thing. For those of you
who are having difficulty accepting the heavy music
scene, or those who would like to experience it, Welcome
would be a fitting album to do that with. Taproot
may just have the skills necessary to help drag nu-metal
out of its current hole.
Cyndi Thomson - “My World”
By: Kenneth
Key Tracks: “What I Really Meant To Say,” “I Always
Liked That Best,” “Things I Would Do,” “I’ll Be
Seeing You”
Rating:
Some snicker in disgust that country music is becoming
more and more pop. However, if newcomer Cyndi Thomson’s
My World is any indication of what’s to come, then
mainstream country has never been this fun. Nearly
everyone has heard Thomson’s breathy vocals in the
sexy ballads and radio hits “What I Really Meant
To Say” and “I Always Liked That Best,” but what
they don’t know is that her album is also filled
with jazzy upbeat tunes such as the country-rap
(read: Toby Keith) “Things I Would Do” and the upcoming
single “I’m Gone” that’ll have shoes jangling across
the dance floor. Unlike many country femme fatales,
Thomson proves not only does she have a powerful
voice, but also a hand in strong writing (co-writing
six of the eleven tracks). One can feel her pain
for a lover who has lost faith in himself (“Wish
I could make you believe/In all that you are/ You
don’t have to be/Everything to everyone” in “If
You Could Only See“) or a breezy, carefree day she
has in Georgia (“My world is sweet as honeysuckle/Hanging
from the vine” in the title track). Each track feels
like a delightful treat Cyndi wrapped from her small
town in Georgia; a trip listeners will want to visit
again and again in their CD players.
Toad The Wet Sprocket -
Coil

By: Dawn
Rating:

Key Tracks: Whatever I Fear, Come Down, Dam Will
Break
Coil was Toad The Wet Sprocket's last cd release
before they broke up. You may remember "All I Want"
as their biggest hit. This cd includes Whatever
I Fear and Crazy Life, the only songs from this
cd released to radio. A pop cd all the way, this
one follows in the footsteps of their older releases.
In Desire, Glen Phillips talks of his desire for
his wife and how it never fades. One of my favorite
songs, Dam Would Break is about someone who holds
in their feelings knowing eventually they will all
spill out. Another song, Rings, is about the life
of a tree. Overall this is a good cd but not their
best. Too bad it's the last one we will ever see
from this group.
Treble Charger - Detox

By: Debbie
Rating:

Key Tracks: Hundred Million
Treble Charger are one of the best bands you'll probably
ever hear. Too bad so many bands have stolen their
sound, including Greg Nori's band, none other than
Sum 41. Detox, release
number five from Treble Charger, sticks to their punchy,
anthemic rock. All songs are total pop-rock with strong
melodies, sing-able choruses and strong vocals. Hundred
Million is a truly ‘sweet!’ song, Can‘t
Wake Up goes from slow to roaring. The
first time I heard Hole In
Your Head, it annoyed me. After listening
it to a few times, it grows on you. Whether Treble
Charger will become well known is still up in the
air, but in our books, they are definitely pop-rock
kings.
Trina – Diamond Princess

By: Debbie
Rating:

Key Tracks: No Panties
Diamond Princess
shows Trina joined by many all stars such as Eve,
Missy Elliot, Ludacris and Tweet (No
Panties). Though very one-dimensional,
since her songs are mostly about sex, clothes and
jewelry, she still proves her skills in No
Panties and Told
Y'all. Her mediocre raps are helped out
by the guest appearances, but not in all cases. Lil'
Brianna's Bow Wow style definitely didn't
help. Most the album contains mediocre tracks, such
as Ladies First, Do you Want
Me and Get This
Money.The interludes are pointless and
were sadly probably just used for filler--what most
CDs today contain a lot of. This isn't an outstanding
album, but will be liked by many. After all, sex sells.
Look at the album cover.
Justin Timberlake- Justified

By: Debbie
Rating:

Key Tracks: Cry Me A River,
Like I Love You
Justin Timberlake’s Justified follows the release
of his ‘rival’s’ solo release. Britney Spears topped
the charts with her last release, as did the likes
of Christina Aguilera. However, with Timberlake and
producers like The Neptunes, Justified has jumped
the vault. No doubt the ladies will love “Never Again,”
as it sounds like a shout-out to Britney Spears: "Would
have given up my life for you, guess it's true what
they say about love -- it's blind / Girl, you lied
straight to my face, looking in my eyes / And I believed
you because I loved you more than life / And all you
had to do is apologize." The first single, Like I
Love You may be one of the most powerful songs, but
it is not the best. “Cry Me A River” almost has a
gospel-opera like vibe. Senorita and Last Night are
totally up tempo and full of energy. Justin isn’t
the first person to change the R&B/Pop game. However,
he’s the only guy with the ‘pop star’ label who has
actually managed to succeed.
The Donnas- Spend The Night
By: Debbie
Rating:

Key Tracks: Take It Off, Dirty
Denim
Think early Joan Jett, just make it more upbeat. For
those that are sick of the Linkin park, Blink-182
type- scene, you’ll love the change. Caught in the
midst of male-led rock bands, The Donna’s definitely
stand out. However, a lot of the tracks sound the
same. "Dirty Denim" and "Not the One" put guys in
their place. The album is opened by “It’s On The Rocks,”
which gives one an excellent taste of what’s on its
way. Tracks such as "Take It Off," "I Don’t Care (So
There)," and "Please Don't Tease" are driven by in-your-face
lyrics. Ending with a guitar solo in "5 O' Clock in
The Morning," you’ll be left wanting more.
Trick Daddy- Thug Holiday
By: Debbie
Rating:
Key Tracks: God’s Been Good,
Ain’t No Santa
Back with his fifth studio album, Trick still falls
into lyrical and musical clichés, like most artists
out there today. It may blend in, but it is going
to be harder to make it stand out in today’s music
scene. “God’s Been Good” features a children’s choir.
On the title track, a prayer is said for everyone
out there who is not tough enough to make it on their
own, on the streets. “Gangsta,” featuring Baby and
Scarface has all three rappers coming through hard.
The single “In the Wind,” is one of the top songs.
Songs like "Ain't No Santa" and "All I Need", are
nice stand out songs, however, that is as good as
the album gets. Decent, but definitely not tops of
2002.

Uncle Kracker - No Stranger
To Shame

By: Debbie
Rating:

Key Tracks: Keep It Comin’,
Drift Away
This time around, Uncle Kracker has decided to take
the radio friendly approach. Stranger to Shame definitely
brings out his country singing more than before. Letter
to My Daughters, is extremely sweet, though
incredibly sappy. Keep It Comin'
is fierce hip-hop and is sure to be a radio single.
Drift Away is the
closest you’ll get to Double
Wide. To Think
I Used to Love You is a straight-up country
song. In A Little While
could have been better if it stayed on track. Uncle
Kracker may have Kid Rock to thank, but with this
release, he can come take a bow. He’s finally out
of Kid Rock’s shadow.
Usher - “8071”
By: Debbie
Rating:

Key Tracks: You got it bad," "You remind me"
Usher is back with 8071. It may have been a while,
since we last heard from him, but he has had no
difficulty whatsoever breaking back into the spotlight.
Usher impresses everyone with his amazing R&B, that
keeps everyone on their toes wanting more. "You
Remind Me" gives Usher the chance to show off his
amazing voice and talent which he posesses. "You
Got It Bad" continues to prove he's becoming a legend.
This singer, producer and songwriter will be around
for a long time to come.
Usher- Confessions

By: Debbie
Rating:

Key Tracks: “Yeah!” and “Truth Hurts”
"Confessions" is simply too much a musical diary
of real-life, personal drama, and not enough charisma
and hype that Usher's is so known for. Somehow though,
it still proves he’s worthy as one of today’s top
R&B artists for lovesick hits. However, “Burn” cannot
escape its fate as the fraternal twin of “U Got
It Bad.” “Confessions” is similar to Brian Mc Knight’s
“Back at One.” As step forward, and an exercise
in self-examination, Usher unloads mad crazy baggage
from unwanted pregnancy (title track), infidelity
(“Truth Hurts”) and failed relationships. Usher
makes sure one has enough boom-boom to sweat up
a storm on the dance floor from “Yeah!” and the
funky chug along of “Truth Hurts.” Regardless of
Usher re-walking ground already conquered, he’ll
keep fans satisfied until next time around.

Various Artists - “MTV TRL
Christmas”
By: Kenneth
Rating:

Key Tracks: Willa Ford - “Santa Baby (Gimme Gimme
Gimme!)”, Angela Vía - “Christmas Wish”, Jimmy Fallon
- “Snowball”
In the true holiday spirit, one ought to march right
up and slap the person who compiled “TRL Christmas.”
Yes, Christmas. An album which has a cheery green
and red cover deserves to actually have songs which
pulls a listener into the warm mist of hot cocoa and
extra-fresh pine trees, not rehashed standard pop
songs, renamed with the word “Christmas” in the title,
about rendezvousing with a lover. For example, tracks
such as LFO’s “Red Letter Day” and Angela Vía’s “Christmas
Wish” are ever-so-fun Top 40 bound songs but they
have little or none relation to Christmas. Irrelevant
fillers also include P.O.D.’s boring “Rock The Party
(RTP Remix)“, Smash Mouth’s surprisingly tame “Better
Do It Right,” and Little T and One Track Mike’s strange
“Snow Angel.” Don’t get me completely wrong, there
are “Christmas songs” on the album which are bearable.
Bad girl Willa Ford claims the misleading title of
the first single, “Santa Baby (Gimme Gimme Gimme!)”which
although does not keep you in the holiday spirit,
it will have you shouting “Gimme Gimme Gimme/Gucci”
in front of your bedroom mirror. Other glowing bulbs
include diva Christina Aguilera’s contribution of
a soulful “Angels We Have Heard On High,” *NSYNC’s
ballad “I Don’t Wanna Spend One More Christmas Without
You,” Jimmy Fallon’s hilarious “Snowball,” and Trans-Siberian
Orchestra’s beautiful album finale of “Christmas Canon.”
It takes no genius to predict that this compilation
will be forgotten by next year, but for that teenybopper
on the Christmas list, this compilation will surely
flicker a smile on their faces... for about a week
or two.

Loudon Wainright III - Unrequited

By: Serena
Rating:

Key tracks: Kings and Queens,
Absence Makes the Heart Grow Fonder, Unrequited to
the Nth Degree
Here's an album from way back when. In fact, it was
probably too obscure even then for your parents to
have ever heard of it! It's a pretty good one though,
so you should check it out. It's a combonation live
and studio album. You get the best of both worlds.
Loudon's fun folky style is similar to Arlo Guthrie.
His songs are apt to make you laugh whether it's a
subtle play on words or just a blatant joke that is
so not-funny that it makes you laugh in spite of yourself.
It's not a comedy album, though. Loudon is an amazing
artist whose humor just happens to shine through in
his music. So go out and try to find this album. You
won't regret it.
Wave- Nothing as it seems

By: Janice
Rating:

Key tracks: California, Until the record breaks,
Sleepless
With their current single "California" and their
other hot songs such as "Touch" and "Read my mind"
Wave, consisting of 21 year olds Paul Gigliotti
and Dave Thomson, are well on their way to fame.
These natives Niagara Falls, Ontario have created
themselves a smash hit of a cd with romantic ballads
such as "Sleepless" to dance worthy tunes such as
"Until the record breaks". Awesome singing, great
beats and catchy lyrics makes this cd a great one
for summer parties and fun. This is definately not
a bubble gum pop album with songs discussing love,
being in love and losing it and the rememberance
of a relationship between a guy and a girl. Although
there are references to "...sipping on tequila..."
(California), "Sunshine and strawberry wine..."
(Daydream) and Marvin Gay's song "Lets get it on"
(Until the record breaks), I do not believe that
parents would fine these songs as offensive compared
to some other songs by such artists as Eminem and
Marilyn Manson. I recommend this cd for people of
all walks of life. Its definately a cd you can put
in your cd player and hit repeat.
Wave- State Of Mind
By: Debbie
Rating:

Key Tracks: Don’t Say Sarah,
Midnight Driving and Let It Ride
Raising the volume and energy, Wave is back with a
new feel, something unlike “California.” Though they’re
not yet well known in the United States, they’re no
longer dreaming of the ‘high life,’ now they’re starting
to live it. State of Mind, specifically “Midnight
Driving,” shows the new maturity level. Though tracks
are still just a variation of boy-chasing-girl or
boy-wanting-girl-back, they seem to be able to whip
up releasable songs in no time. “Don’t Say Sarah”
will be able to take guys and girls alike through
a part of their life they are trying to move on from,
or back through old feelings. With louder guitars,
Wave creates a fresh new feel on tracks like “Save
a Little Part” and “Let It Ride,” definitely crowd
pleasers. As each day passes, Wave gradually gets
closer to their unique vibe. That day may not come
tomorrow, but it’ll definitely be worth the wait.
Weezer - The Blue Album

By: Serena
Rating:

Key Tracks: The World Has Turned and Left Me
Here, Buddy Holly, Say It Ain't So
There are so many gems in this album that you will
want to listen to it repeatedly on a summer's day
while cruising in your 1986 Oldsmobile. The lyrics
are coy and clever. The melodies are catchy. The
harmonies are cute. Wether you are an Emo geek or
not, you will probably like this album. My favorite
song of all is Say It Ain't So because of
the pure energy. If you have ever felt like a loser,
an outcast, or a freak of nature (which you invariably
have) this album is for you.
Wide Mouth Mason- “Stew”
By: Debbie
Rating:

Key Tracks: “Change” and “Smile”
I'm not going to lie. When I popped Wide Mouth Masons
stew into my cd player, I was totally amazed. It
was nothing like I thought it would be. After only
hearing two songs before getting the cd, I thought
the only good songs would be those two, "Change"
and "Smile." I was totally wrong! "Stew" is produced
by Big Sugar front man Gordie Johnson. To paraphrase
Johnson, "The first two albums were full of music
that made the listener shake his head; this album
is full of music that makes the listener shake his
booty." If you do not already own this album, go
buy it. I know this sounds repetative because it
is always said, but if you don't buy it, you don't
know what you're missing!
Wide Mouth Mason – Rained
Out Parade

By: Debbie
Rating:

Key Tracks: Bootleggin, Come
Out To Go
While Stew was an
excellent album, it cannot compare to the quality
of Rained Out Parade.
The album is essentially a grab bag of various styles
and sounds. Every track is quite different from the
others on the CD, so it never feels repetitive and
boring. Songs range from rock to reggae, bluesy slide
guitar to electronica beatbox, to funky backbeats
and strong vocals. Any group that can put such a wide
variety of styles onto a single album and have them
all sound great is worthy of respect. Each band member
brought something to the studio and created something
that probably amazed them just as much as it has amazed
their fans. Tracks such as Reconsider,
and Come Out To
Go combine emotions, band experience on
a personal level, and the unknown, which in turn produces
something unbelievably amazing.

The X-Ecutioners - Do It Like
This
By: Deniz
Rating:

I was surprised when I put a CD into my CD player,
accidentaly turned the radio on, and the X-Ecutioners’
latest single, “It’s Goin’ Down”, came blasting out
of my speakers. Why was I so surprised? That same
single was on the very CD I was popping into the CD
player - Built From Scratch, the X-Ecutioners’ new
album. You may have heard this breakout single, which
is getting massive airplay on radio stations like
XFM. The song, a bouncy scratch-fest using guitar
riff loops as part of its melody, features Linkin
Park’s DJ Joe Hahn and emcee Mike Shinoda. The X-Ecutioners,
a team of four turntablists, scratch with DJ Hahn,
who produced the single and its music video. Built
From Scratch, the X-Ecutioners’ newest release since
X-Pressions in 1997, opens with an Intro tune that
incorporates retro-sounding loops and sound effects
that launches right into the next song. While the
DJs scratch, the many guests on the CD rap or beat-box
to the music, or scratch with the X-Ecutioners on
an instrumental track. Although I’m not an all-out
rap fan, I enjoyed this CD. Instrumental tracks like
“X-Ecutioners Scratch”, “A Journey Into Sound”, and
“Premier’s X-Ecution” have really infectious dance
beats. Another song that incorporates guitar riff
loops is “Let It Bang”, featuring M.O.P. Another highlight
on the CD, “B-boy Punk Rock”, featuring Everlast,
uses a funky looped 70's melody. The X-Ecutioners’
quick scratching create interesting effects in each
song. No two songs are the same and each one is put
together creatively. Though this is CD is probably
more for hip-hop lovers, and ideal if you’re into
breakdancing, it’s a great CD to bust out dancing
to for anyone.

Youngstown - Let's Roll
By: Debbie
Rating:

Youngstown may be another boyband, but they sure arn't
the worst out there. They write some of their music,
which isn't very common in todays pop market, although
it has become a more re-ocurring thing. You'll most
likely recognize the "Inspector Gaget" song, which
was the first release from the movie's soundtrack.
Their ballads are not bad, one of my favorites being
"Through Your Eyes." Youngstown may not be the number
one "boy band" out there, but they definitely have
the potential to stay in the limelight for as long
as they wish.

3 Of Hearts
By: Debbie
Rating:

Key Tracks: Love Is Enough, 6,8,12 and Arizona Rain
You can't buy this cd in Canada. You can't see their
music video on CMT. You can, however, buy this cd
online. 3 Of Hearts give a totally new meaning to
the pop/country genre. If you like Faith Hill, Adam
Gregory or Jessica Andrews, you'll love this cd. They
cover "6,8,12" by Brian McKnight and give it a totally
new feel. "Love Is Enough," their first single that
is topping the US charts has a pop but new country
vibe. "Is It Love" has more of a poppish edge. Regardless
of what "The Province" said this past summer, this
cd is worth buying.
98*-"Revelation"
By: Debbie
Rating:

Key Tracks: Give me just one night (una noche),
My everything
98* is still rising with their newest release "Revelation."
98* may not of beaten *Nsync's record for sales,
but they still manage to fir up their charts with
their hit "Give me just one night (una noche)" and
with their newest release "my everything." "Revelation"
consists of 13 tracks, which contains a mix of fast
tracks and soft love-ballads. You may see 98* as
one of those bands out these days that can put on
a good show, but have no real talent.Think again.
98* may not play their own instruments, but they
have a huge part in writing their songs, and they
can sure sing and dance! Let me warn you..if you
do not buy this album..you are really missing out!
Go buy it!
