Brie Larson

By:Debbie

popYOUlarity: You have to be happy to have the record coming out. What is going through your head right now?
Brie: So many emotions are going through my head all at once right now with the record coming out. It is such an odd feeling because I’ve worked so hard for this moment and I guess I never really thought that the album would actually come out. I’m so scared. I’m just curious to show how it will do. I’m hoping for the best, but expecting the worst type of thing.

popYOUlarity: Are you just relieved at that point that it’s done?
Brie: Yeah, I think that there is something to be said for it just coming out. I feel really lucky to have just gotten to this point. There are so many people who are immensely talented who won’t even get this opportunity. I’m just taking it as a blessing and what ever happens, happens.

popYOUlarity: What types of things do you do on a daily basis with the motivation being that you were doing this for your health?
Brie: Every morning I try and get up and walk with my aunt and my mom. We walk around my neighborhood and we have a lot of hills so it is definitely kind of tough. Especially for me, I’m trying to get into better shape. Especially with touring and stuff, you really have to have a lot of strength to sing and jump around, to be able to put on the best show possible. So I’m just getting ready for that.

popYOUlarity: Which item – if you lost it, would either send you in a tizzy or force you to stop everything until you found it?
Brie: My I-pod or my cell phone. Those are probably the two things that I take with me wherever I go and I don’t know what I would do without them. My cell phone is crazy cool because I have all these gadgets on it. That’s the only way I keep in contact with my friends. I would hate to think what would happen If I lost all my numbers. I have hundreds of numbers in my phone that I don’t have a hard copy of.

popYOUlarity: Some people get the heeby jeebies when they see a spider, for others it might be whenever they hear the phrase, “I think we should talk,” What gives you the heeby jeebies?
Brie: When my mom calls me by my real name. That’s when I know that I’m trouble. I always know that I’ve done something bad, or something that I shouldn’t have when she does that. I’m a creative person and I have the tendency to re model my room without telling anybody and I get these crazy ideas to paint my walls. I got home from Florida two weeks ago and I had this idea to have my friends come over and we would all paint on my ceiling. It looks really cool, but I don’t tell anyone, so I definitely got called by my full name after that!

popYOUlarity: Is there an album/cd that you listened to non-stop during a particularly memorable period of your life?
Brie: I listen to so much music. I have so much music on my computer that they won’t let me put anymore on. There is no more space. I think the Razorlight CD has been pretty influential for me. It is such and amazing cd. I have listened to it every morning for I can’t even remember how long. Also the No Doubt cd “Rock City.” I was like 12 and I was on a TV show and my mom and me would listen to that in the car as we were going to work every morning for a year. My friend was playing that CD in her car the other day and every single time it reminds me of those days and I’m suddenly 12 again.

popYOUlarity: What is one character trait of yours that you have because of the way you were raised?
Brie: I think my determination and definitely my creativity came from my mom and my whole family. My grandma was teaching me how to sew yesterday. There is a lot of creativity runs in my family. My grandpa was a songwriter and played guitar and I think a lot of my musical background comes from that. A lot of crazy ideas I have, like wanting painting my room, or I scrapbook a lot. I’m just a creative crazy person and it definitely comes from my family.

popYOUlarity: If someone asked you the question, “What do you really want?” what would be your response?
Brie: I really want a unicorn!

popYOUlarity: Talk about: “Hope Has Wings”
Brie: Basically it is a song I was asked to do for the “Barbie Movie” soundtrack. I just loved the message it portrayed about hope and I think that is important to instill that at a young age. Also what caught my eye about the movie is that they used a lot of classical symphonies in the movie, which teaches a lot of background to the kids without them realizing it. I think that it really helps kids in the long run and is such a creative outlet. It goes back to don’t do drugs and I think that if you have some way to let your emotions out you’re not going to do it, you’re not going to act out in other ways.

popYOUlarity: What about: “Shoebox”
Brie: “Shoebox” is actually a song that I fought and fought for to get on the record. Nobody seemed to get what I was talking about. It finally got on the record and it is probably one of the most memorable, favorable songs on the album. It is basically an interesting song about a girl who is crazy about this guy but he is kind of with somebody else and she keeps his picture in her shoebox.

popYOUlarity: Under which circumstances do you find it almost impossible to hide your true feelings?
Brie: I don’t think there is ever a time that I hide my true feelings. I’m really open person. I can’t imagine not saying what I actually feel. Sometimes it gets the to point where it bites me in the butt because I’m too honest with people. But I don’t think there is ever a time where I don’t say what mean or mean what I say.

popYOUlarity: What is the sweetest thing someone has ever done for you?
Brie: Recently my best friend Claire did something really cool for my birthday. I just turned 16 last week and for my birthday she got my tickets to the “Bright Eyed” concert, which is my favourite band and she also made me this map. She goes on tour with me, as my make up artist and she does my make up on tour. We’ve been to so many places together. Both of us had never really been outside of California, so when we went touring we were just fascinated at how diverse the Unites Sates was. She made me this map of the United States and she made it so cool and it’s pink and pretty. She put a picture of us at every place we had been to. We’re going to continue on to do it until we’ve filled up the whole map.

popYOUlarity: Can you talk about your songwriting contribution on this album? How much of these songs represent you?
Brie: The songs completely represent me. I didn’t write four songs on the album. Those four songs are on the album because they meant something to me. I identify with them in some way. I was really picky about the songs that I didn’t write so I’m really proud of the ones on the album. I think that they are really solid songs. What is interesting about the album is that all the songs that I wrote have been from when I was 12 to probably 14/15. Which is the peak time for a girl when they are growing up. Trying to figure out who they are and that is document completely in the album and I think it was an interesting way for me to look back. Some people keep diaries or notebooks, but I’ve got an album that resembles exactly how I was feeling going through those years of growing up and feeling alone and feeling like I didn’t quite know who I was or what I wanted to do with my life.

popYOUlarity: If you had to finish the Sentence "Music Means _____" with what music really means to you, what would the sentence say?
Brie: I could actually use so many words after that! I’m going crazy right now trying to think of a good word. I think music is powerful. I think that it is the over all message, no matter what kind of songs you write, they affect people in some kind of way. Whether it is to get up and dance, or even cry. Music is probably the most powerful tool today and I feel so lucky that I get to be a part of it. When I write it takes such a burden off of me and when those songs get to other people it takes the burden off of them because they can identify with them.

popYOUlarity: Do you have anything you would like to say to the readers of popYOUlarity.com?
Brie: I’d like to say HI! and thank you so much for everything and I really appreciate everyone taking the time to read this. My album comes out October 18th.
